ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's basketball team welcomed in Wayne State for the final game of their weekend homestand. The top-ranked Lakers proved to be too much for the Warriors, leading for the entire game, and coming away with an 81-48 victory.
Grand Valley got off to a 9-0 run to begin the game and put the Warriors in an early hole. They were able to extend the lead up to 12 at 17-5 following a
Rylie Bisballe layup, part of her six points in the quarter. Wayne State was able to get some points back, but they could not get their deficit under double-digits to close out the quarter, trailing 20-9.
The Warriors got it down to seven early in the second quarter, but
Abrie Cabana responded quickly with an and-1 jumper and free throw to put the Lakers back up by 10.
Hadley Miller scored four straight points and
Ellie Droste hit a triple to put the Lakers up by 15 late in the half, which is what they lead by at the break, up 39-24.
Both teams traded baskets for the entirety of the third quarter, with each team scoring 14 points over the 10 minutes of play. GVSU maintained their 15-point lead at 53-38 heading into the final quarter of play.
Six straight points from Bisballe to open the quarter pushed the Laker lead above 20 at 59-38. After Wayne State got a couple back,
Lexi Plitzuweit buried one from deep to put the Lakers up by 22. The Warriors scored to get it back to a 20-point game, but
Megan Crow hit a layup to start a 15-2 Laker run to end the game, giving GVSU their sixth seventh straight game holding an opponent under 50 points scored.
Rylie Bisballe scored a season-high 21 points, while pulling down nine rebounds to lead the Lakers.
Lexi Plitzuweit recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Megan Crow had 10 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting, while adding three steals.
Ellie Droste and
Abrie Cabana each scored eight points in the game.
