Big Third Quarter Helps Laker Women Take Down LSSU

SAULT STE MARIE, MICH. – It was a battle of the Lakers, as GVSU left the lower peninsula to go up north and play LSSU for their first road game of 2024. Grand Valley got off to a slow start, but exploded in the second half to come away with a 69-25 victory. The win moves GVSU to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in league play.
 
LSSU scored the first four points of the game and held a 6-2 lead when Macy Bisballe hit a triple to start a 10-0 for GVSU. Hadley Miller hit a layup to put them up 7-6 and Abrie Cabana capped off the run with the final four points of the quarter, as GVSU doubled up LSSU 12-6 after one.
 
Nicole Kamin buried a three-pointer to begin the second quarter to put the Lakers up 15-6. Lake State was able to cut their deficit down to four at 17-13, but GVSU responded to go back up by nine, until LSSU hit a shot at the buzzer to make it 23-16 at the half.
 
The third quarter was all GVSU, as they outscored LSSU 28-2 over the 10 minutes of play. Ellie Droste hit two threes as part of a personal 10-0 run that started a larger 21-0 Laker run. Cabana hit a three and Rylie Bisballe scored four points as part of the run as well, before LSSU finally got on the board in the quarter with just 1:43 left in the quarter. After that basket, Cabana drilled another triple, and Bisballe and Nicole Kamin each scored to finish out the quarter with GVSU leading 51-18.
 
Megan Crow had four early points in the fourth period, as GVSU continued to extend their lead. Macy Bisballe hit another three to put GVSU up by 40 at 63-23, and GVSU continued to closed out their eighth straight win to stay unbeated in league play.
 
Abrie Cabana led the way with 12 points, while Ellie Droste added 11, and Rylie Bisballe had 10 points. Nicole Kamin had seven points and six rebounds, and Hadley Miller pulled down seven boards, as GVSU won the rebounding battle 57-32. The Lakers scored 32 points in the paint and forced 21 turnovers in the win.
