THE SERIES
• #4 Grand Valley State leads the all-time series with Saginaw Valley State by a 40-11 margin, have won 10 consecutive and 18-of-the-last-19 games in the series. GVSU claimed a 29-10 victory over the Cardinals a year ago in Allendale, and a 49-17 victory over the Cardinals in 2021 in University Center. The Lakers sport a record of 24-2 at Lubbers Stadium versus the Cardinals and a 16-9 mark at Wickes Stadium. From 2002 - 2010, Grand Valley State was ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in 10-of-the-11 meetings with the Cardinals. The lone time SVSU has been ranked higher than GVSU was in the 2003 playoffs and GVSU claimed a 10-3 win at Saginaw Valley State in the playoffs and eventually went on to win the National Championship.

Grand Valley State is 35-14 all-time in GLIAC openers, including a 16-6 record on the road and a 19-8 mark in GLIAC openers at home. 

•  The Lakers are celebrating their 52nd year of football in 2023. GVSU is the all-time winningest program in DII history with a record of 433-150-3 (.741).  In addition, GVSU is also the winningest team in GLIAC history with a 310-77-3 mark (.795).     

• GVSU has won a total of four national championships (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) in program history.

• The Lakers have made six NCAA championship appearances (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009) in program history.

•  GVSU has made a total of 22 playoff appearances in program history, with the most recent coming in 2022.

• Grand Valley State has always played one of the most challenging schedules nationally and 2023 is no different. Five of the Lakers' first six opponents, including the first three non-conference games, are ranked in a national poll and six are currently ranked overall.

• GVSU holds the Division II record for the longest winning streak at 40 consecutive wins from 2005-2007. The Lakers won two national championships during that span.

Last Week - 
#4 Grand Valley State claimed a 43-7 victory over #19 Assumption in the Brian Kelly Bowl. The Lakers scored on their third play of the game, a 67-yard shovel pass from Cade Peterson to Kellen Reed, and built a 17-0 halftime lead. GVSU added pair of Peterson rushing TDs in the second half and 1-yard TD runs by Tariq Reid and Derrick Woods. Peterson was named the GLIAC Player of the Week with 237 passing yards and two TDs, while rushing for 60 yards and a pair of scores. Defensive end Christian McCarroll was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week with a career-high 10 tackles, 1.5 QB sacks (-8) and 2.5 TFL (-9).

• Special Teams - GVSU ranks second nationally in Kickoff Return Defense (10.6 ypr), seventh in Kickoff Return Average (30.0 ypr) and ninth in Net Punting Average (40.2 ypp)

 - The Lakers' kickoff return team tallied the 5th-best single-game total in GVSU football history with 216 yards on five returns vs. CSU-Pueblo.
 - Assumption tallied 12 kickoff return yards on three returns (4.0 ypr).  

• RS Freshman Kellen Reed has touched  the ball three times in his career. 
 - His first touch vs. CSU-Pueblo he returned a kickoff 95 yards for a TD, the 7th longest return in program history.

• Senior QB Cade Peterson ranks 10th nationally and leads the GLIAC in yards per completion (16.1). In addition, Peterson leads the GLIAC in pass efficiency rating (156.7). 

• Junior WR Cody Tierney ranks 2nd in the GLIAC in receiving yards (292) and receiving yards per game (97.3) and 4th in receptions per game (5.0). 

• Senior RB Tariq Reid leads the GLIAC in rushing TDs with five and scoring with 10.0 ppg.
• Senior DE Christian McCarroll leads the GLIAC and ranks ninth nationally in tackles for loss (6.5), while leading the GLIAC and ranking 11th nationally in QB  sacks (4.5).

• Grand Valley State ranks 11th nationally and leads the GLIAC in scoring offense (42.7 ppg)

• GVSU ranks 20th nationally in rushing defense (78.8 ypg) and 22nd nationally in rushing offense (200.3 ypg). 

• The Lakers rank 13th nationally and lead the GLIAC in total offense (460.0 ypg). 

• GVSU leads the GLIAC and ranks 32nd nationally in time of possession per game (32.22).   

• GVSU has rushed for 11 TDs in three games, while yielding just two rushing TDs.

NCAA ATTENDANCE LEADERS
• GVSU led the nation in attendance for the 11th consecutive year in 2022. The Lakers drew 81,767 fans for seven home dates, an average of 11,681 per game. GVSU was involved in six of the top 13 single-game marks in 2022, including five at Lubbers Stadium. The 2023 home opener total was 15,182, the 11th best single-game total in program history.

Grand Valley State senior quarterback Cade Peterson and senior defensive end Christian McCarroll earned GLIAC Player of the Week honors it was announced by the league office today. The #4 Lakers claimed a 43-7 victory over #19 Assumption before a crowd of 15,844 at Lubbers Stadium. 

• Peterson, who has now won the honor five times in his career, completed 15-of-23 passes for 237 yards and two TDs, while rushing for 60 yards and two touchdowns. He contributed 297 yards and had a hand in four of GVSU's six touchdowns. Peterson leads the GLIAC in passing yards (687) and ranks fifth in rushing yards (172). Drew has accounted for 7,248 yards of total offense (5,802 passing/1446 rushing) and 70 TDs in his career.

• McCarroll tallied a career-high 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss (-9), 1.5 quarterback sacks (-8) and two QB hurries versus Assumption. McCarroll was a key figure in the Laker defense limiting the Greyhounds to 272 yards of total offense, including just 79 on the ground. McCarroll, who has earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors twice in his career, leads the GLIAC in QB sacks (3.5) and tackles for loss (6.5) in 2023. 

#2 Tariq Reid, RB
2023 - Rushed 40 times for 139 yards and five TDs...Rushed for 119 yards and a single-game, career-high four TDs vs. CSU-Pueblo.

2022 All-American...Ranks 14th among active RB in career rushing yards with 2,300 yards and 33 TDs on 397 carries in his career…Hauled in 13 receptions for 120 yards and two TDs...Rushed for 1,027 yards and 19 TDs in 2022.

2023 - Tallied 12 receptions for 151 yards and one TD on the year...Hauled in a career-high 6 passes for 69 yards and a TD vs. Assumption...Hauled in three passes for 54 yards and returned two kickoffs for 115 yards vs. CS-Pueblo...Caught three passes for 28 yards at Mines in the opener.
