Volleyball Takes Down SVSU In Four Sets

SAGINAW, MICH. – The GVSU women's volleyball team completed the sweep of the weekend, as they took down SVSU in four sets to move to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in GLIAC play.

The Lakers took the match in four sets by the scores of 22-25, 25-19, 25-18, and 25-20. The Lakers controlled set one for majority of the set, going up 20-14 and forcing a SVSU timeout. The Cardinals responded big-time out of the break, ending the set on a 11-2 run to overtake the Lakers and win the first set. Set two started pretty similar to set one, as GVSU jumped out the gates, going up 18-11. The Cardinals once again tried to go on a run to end the set, but the Lakers would not let it happen again, stopping their run at 20-16 and finishing off the set to tie the match. In set three, SVSU got an early lead, but GVSU used a big 9-1 run to take the lead and hang on from there to go up 2-1. After a back and forth beginning to the final set, the Lakers again used a big run to take the lead, this time a 8-1 run to go up 19-12. Once again the Cardinals battled back and made it a game at 22-20, but the Lakers closed it out with the final three points of the match to get a win over their rival.

Jordyn Gates tallied another triple-double, as she had 15 kills, 30 assists, and 16 digs, while adding five total blocks. Kendall Stover had 13 kills and 12 digs, while Meghan O'Sullivan tied her career-high with 11 kills. Brianna Stawski added seven kills and seven total blocks, while Rachel Jacquay had 20 assists and 12 digs and Julia Blaney and Madison Gates also added 12 digs apiece.

"While we struggled offensively tonight, I thought our team did a great job of finding ways to win. Saginaw is such a tough defensive team that makes you play so many extra points. Our team did a good job of staying focused on our side of the net, adjusting, and being willing to play long points," remarked head coach Jason Johnson. "I am super happy to get two wins this weekend, now we get to play at home Tuesday night."
