MARQUETTE, MICH. – The GVSU volleyball team got back to their winning ways this afternoon as they took down Northern Michigan in four sets to move to 7-1 this season and pick up their first GLIAC victory.
"I was very impressed with the bounce back of our team. They took care of each other, reaffirmed their goals and standards then got back to work," head coach
Jason Johnson stated. "I thought their commitment to our blocking and defensive scheme allowed us to slow down Northern's offense and help us get great opportunities with our transition offense."
The Lakers took the match in four sets by the scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-11, and 25-11. Set one was back-and-forth to start, with neither team able to go on a run until GVSU broke an 11-11 stalemate with five consecutive points to take the lead, and they would hold on from there to win the first set. The Lakers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set two before the Wildcats battled back. The two teams were tied late in the set at 21 apiece, but NMU ended on a 4-1 run to tie the match up. The final two sets were all Lakers, as they went up early and never looked back, cruising to each set win and claiming their first win in GLIAC play.
