GVSU Captures 2022-23 Learfield Directors' Cup

The Lakers have now won 15 Directors' Cup titles

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced today that Grand Valley State captured the 2022-23 Learfield Directors' Cup title with 936.75 points in the maximum number of 15 sports. The Lakers' 15 Directors' Cup crowns is a Division II record and GVSU has also finished among the top two in the final standings each of the last 20 years the trophy has been presented. West Texas A&M finished second (904.75), Colorado School of Mines third (855.00) and Indianapolis fourth (829.25). Among fellow GLIAC members, Wayne State finished 21st (498.50), Ferris State 31st (434.50) and Saginaw Valley State 35th (410.75). 

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup trophy, which is commonly known as the all-sports trophy, is presented to the top athletic department in the country each year. The scoring system is based on the top 15 national finishes of men's and women's sports, but must include men's and women's basketball, baseball and volleyball in the final point totals. 

Grand Valley State scored 240.0 points in the fall, followed by 296.0 points in the winter and 400.75 in the spring. GVSU scored points in 17 sports, dropping the points scored (266.5) by women's soccer, women's swimming & diving, women's golf, men's and women's tennis. The Lakers recorded nine top five finishes and 13 top 10 finishes nationally.

Women's Cross Country – 2 (90); Softball  - 2 (90); Women's Lacrosse – 3 (83); Men's Indoor Track & Field – 3 (85); Men's Cross Country – 4 (80); Men's Outdoor Track & Field – 4 (80); Football – 5 (70); Men's Golf – 5 (75); Women's Outdoor Track & Field – 5 (75); Women's Indoor Track & Field – 6 (74); Men's Swimming & Diving – 6 (73.5); Women's Soccer – 9 (64); Women's Basketball – 10 (64)

"I am so proud of our student-athletes and staff for this incredible accomplishment," said athletic director, Keri Becker. "This is a direct reflection of the type of individuals we attract to Grand Valley State and how they compete throughout each of our sports. In addition, our student-athletes achieved at a high level in the classroom and represented Grand Valley State in our communities," added Becker. 

Grand Valley State also claimed the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) 2022-23 Presidents' Trophy for the 24th consecutive year and a GLIAC-best 29th time overall. The Presidents' Trophy, commonly referred to as the All-Sports Trophy, is awarded at the end of each year of competition to the conference member having demonstrated general excellence in all sports. The Presidents' Trophy is designed to promote well-rounded athletic programs within each member institution.
