GVSU Claims The 2025-26 Learfield Directors' Cup

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced today that Grand Valley State captured the 2025-26 Learfield Directors' Cup title with a Division II record point total of 1,089.75 points in the maximum number of 15 sports. GVSU has won six consecutive titles and the 18 Learfield Directors' Cup crowns overall is a Division II record. The Lakers have finished among the top two in the final standings in each of the last 22 years the trophy has been presented. Grand Valley State has won 18-of-the-last-21 titles overall, have scored 1,000 or more points 11 times and hold the top 15 overall point totals. Wingate finished second with 892.5 points, followed by Indianapolis (832.00), West Texas A&M (737.75), and Minnesota State (705.00). Among fellow GLIAC members, Ferris State finished 39th (426.00), Saginaw Valley State finished 64th (316.25), and Wayne State finished 65th (313.0). 

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup trophy, which is commonly known as the all-sports trophy, is presented to the top athletic department in the country each year. The scoring system is based on the top 15 national finishes of men's and women's sports, but must include men's and women's basketball, baseball and volleyball in the final point totals. 

Grand Valley State scored 180.0 points in the fall, followed by 528.50 points in the winter and 381.25 in the spring. GVSU scored points in 19 sports, highlighted by three team national championships (women's XC, women's basketball and men's outdoor TF). The Lakers' recorded 11 top 10 finishes and seven top five finishes nationally in the final sport standings. GVSU scored 206 points outside of the top 15 sport totals that were not included in the overall score.

Women's Basketball – 100; Men's Outdoor Track & Field – 100; Women's Cross Country – 100; Men's Indoor Track & Field – 90; Women's Tennis – 83; Men's Cross Country - 80; Women's Wrestling - 80; Women's Indoor Track & Field – 73.5; Women's Swimming & Diving- 70.5; Women's Golf - 68; Men's Golf – 66; Men's Wrestling – 64.5; Baseball - 64; Men's Basketball - 50.

"I am so proud of our student-athletes, coaches and staff for this incredible accomplishment," said GVSU athletic director, Keri Becker. "This is a direct reflection of the type of individuals we attract to Grand Valley State and how they compete throughout each of our sports and when I think about six consecutive and 18 overall, I am humbled by the work and effort that goes into this accomplishment in all facets of our department. In addition, our student-athletes achieved at a high level in the classroom and represented Grand Valley State in our communities with community service and support in a significant number of venues," added Becker. 

Grand Valley State also claimed the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) 2025-26 Presidents' Trophy for the 27th consecutive year and a GLIAC-best 32nd time overall. The Presidents' Trophy, commonly referred to as the All-Sports Trophy, is awarded at the end of each year of competition to the conference member having demonstrated general excellence in all sports. The Presidents' Trophy is designed to promote well-rounded athletic programs within each member institution.
