Lakers Fall 8-5 in Regular Season Finale Against SVSU

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State baseball team dropped the final game of the regular season 8-5 Sunday (May 7) afternoon against Saginaw Valley State at the GVSU Baseball Field. The Lakers finish the regular season with a 28-19 record.
 
Saginaw Valley State got on the board first in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals got to third on a Laker error and scored on a sacrifice fly. The Lakers answered in the bottom half to tie the game at one. Kyle Nott led off with a walk and Jonas Gulbrandsen singled to left field. Next batter, Logan Anderson singled down the left field line to score Nott.
 
The Cardinals quickly regained the lead in the second inning with two runs to take a 3-1 lead. SVSU notched a two-RBI single to left field. They would add a run in the third to make it 4-1 off a Laker error. The Lakers would cut the deficit to one in the fourth inning. Brendan Guciardo singled to center field and Justin Mansager singled to left center. Both Guciardo and Mansager scored off a Cardinal error with two outs in the inning to make it 4-3. 
 
The Cardinals added a run in the fifth to take a two-run lead on a sacrifice fly to center field. SVSU added three runs in the sixth off a Laker error to take an 8-3 lead. The Lakers added two runs in the ninth to make it 8-5 on a Conner McCormack two-run home run to right center. 
 
Mike Morawski got the start and suffered the loss (3-1) allowing two earned runs off three hits. Will Goebel tossed 3.2 innings of relief allowing one earned run off three hits with two strikeouts. Justin Mansager went 2-3 with a run scored, while Conner McCormack batted 2-5 with a home run and two runs batted in. Jonas Gulbrandsen added two hits and a run scored. 
 
The Lakers will now play in the GLIAC Tournament beginning next week Thursday (May 11) where they will face Saginaw Valley State again in the first round in Lansing, Michigan. First begin is set for 7:00 PM at Jackson Field home of the Lansing Lugnuts.
