Lakers Fall in GLIAC Tournament Championship

LANSING – The Grand Valley State baseball team lost to Wayne State in a winner take all championship game of the GLIAC Tournament Sunday (May 14) afternoon at Jackson Field. The Lakers overcame an 8-1 deficit to win 9-8 in 10 innings to force a winner take all game but fell 4-2. The Lakers finish the season with a 32-21 record. 
 
GAME ONE – W, 9-8 (10 Innings)
 
Wayne State went ahead early with a big five-run first inning notching four hits. The Warriors made it 6-0 in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice that beat the throw home. The Lakers got on the board in the fifth inning to cut the deficit back to five. Brendan Guciardo led off with a double down the left field line. Jake Rydquist singled to center field to advance Guciardo to third and Connor Schuman scored Guciardo on an RBI infield single. 
 
Wayne State responded in the bottom half of the fifth with an RBI single through the left side to make it 7-1. The Warriors made it 8-1 later in the inning with a bases loaded bunt single. The Lakers answered right back in the sixth with two runs go get back with five. Nathan Logan reached on a Warrior error. Conner McCormack doubled down the left field line to score Logan to make it 8-2 and Guciardo singled through the right side to score McCormack. 
 
The Lakers continued to battle back, coming all the way back to tie the game at eight with a five-run seventh inning. Spencer Nelson got things started with an infield single followed by a Nott single to left field. Logan Anderson walked to load the bases and Nathan Logan walked to allow Nelson to score making it 8-4. Next at bat, McCormack singled to center field to score Nott. After a sacrifice fly to score Anderson, Rydquist kept rally going with a single to left field to score Logan to bring the Lakers within one. Next batter, Connor Schuman tied the game at eight with an RBI single up the middle to score McCormack. 
 
Josh Schell kept the Lakers in the game with a dominant performance on the mound. Schell tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit to help the Lakers send the game into extra innings. In the tenth inning, Nelson blasted a leadoff solo home run to give the Lakers their first lead of the game. That was Nelson's seventh home run of the season. Sam Leck shut the door down in the tenth, retiring the Warriors in order to secure the Laker win and forcing a decisive game two for the championship. Leck earned the win (3-2) after tossing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
 
Spencer Nelson led the offense going 3-6 including the game-winning home run, double, and two runs scored. Brendan Guciardo went 2-4 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Connor Schuman hit 2-4 with two RBIs and a walk, while Jake Rydquist batted 2-4 at the plate with and RBI. Kyle Nott also went 2-4 with a run scored and walk. 
 
GAME TWO – L, 4-2
 
Wayne State jumped out to an early lead again in game two with one run in the opening inning. The Warriors notched an RBI single to left field to score the game's opening run. The Lakers answered in the second inning to tie the game at one. Connor Schuman and MacArthur Graybill hit back-to-back singles and advanced on a wild pitch. Justin Mansager lined one back to the pitcher and Schuman beat the throw home to score. 
 
GVSU took the lead in the third inning to go up 2-1. Nathan Logan walked, and Conner McCormack singled to right center to advance Logan to second. With two outs, Schuman singled to right field scoring Logan to give the Lakers the lead. The Lakers tossed five consecutive scoreless innings, but the Warriors would take the lead with a three-run seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Warriors tied the game at two with an RBI single through the left side and would take the lead on a two-RBI single to left field.
 
The Lakers would not be able to find the equalizer and would fall 4-2. Logan Wynalda got the start and tossed five innings allowing just one run off four hits with three strikeouts. Nick Rutkowski suffered the loss (8-3), while Will Goebel tossed a scoreless inning of relief. 
 
Connor Schuman went 2-4 with a run scored and RBI. Brendan Gucairdo and MacArthur Graybill each hit 1-2. Spencer Nelson, Kyle Nott, Conner McCormack, and Logan Anderson each added a hit.
