LANSING – The Grand Valley State baseball team fell 13-8 to Purdue Northwest in the second round of the GLIAC Tournament Friday (May 12) night at Jackson Field home of the Lansing Lugnuts in Lansing, Michigan. The Lakers fall to 29-20 on the season and will face Davenport tomorrow (May 13) afternoon at 3:00 PM in an elimination game.
Both teams got off to a fast start by scoring two runs in the opening inning. For the Lakers in the inning,
Kyle Nott and
Nathan Logan led off the inning with back-to-back walks and advanced a base on a wild pitch.
Logan Anderson cut the deficit in half with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Nott. Later in the inning,
Jonas Gulbrandsen ripped a double to right center to tie the game at two scoring Logan.
The Lakers took the lead in the second inning to make it 3-2.
Connor Schuman and
MacArthur Graybill hit back-to-back singles with one out. Next at bat, Nott smoked a single to right field to score Schuman to give the Lakers the one-run lead. The Pride quickly responded in the next half inning with two runs off three hits to take a 4-3 lead. Purdue Northwest tied the game with an RBI double and took the lead on a single to left field.
The Lakers would tie the game at four in the fourth inning. Graybill notched his second hit of the night to get things started and advanced to second on a hit by pitch by Nott. The Lakers would load the bases and
Logan Anderson was hit by the pitch to tie the game at four scoring Graybill.
Purdue Northwest regained the lead in the sixth with an eight-run inning to take a 12-4 lead. The Pride scored eight runs off eight hits with four being doubles. Purdue Northwest added another run in the seventh inning with a solo home run to push the Laker deficit to 13-4. The Lakers would score four runs in the bottom half to pull within five.
Spencer Nelson led off the inning with a single and
Connor Schuman followed with a single.
MacArthur Graybill walked to load the bases. Next at bat, Nott singled to center field to score Nelson. Logan notched an RBI to score Schuman to make it 13-6. Graybill scored on the next at bat on a wild pitch and Nott scored to make it 13-8 on an RBI infield single by Anderson.
Logan Anderson went 3-4 with a team high three RBIs.
Spencer Nelson batted 3-5 on the night with a run scored.
Kyle Nott went 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a walk.
MacArthur Graybill notched two hits with two runs scored and two walks.
Jonas Gulbrandsen hit 2-6 with a double and RBI, while
Connor Schuman added two hits and two runs scored.
Colby Phipps got the start on the mound and suffered the loss (7-4) after tossing five innings recording five strikeouts.
Logan Wynalda and
Josh Schell each tossed two innings of relief.
