Lakers Defeat Davenport 7-5 in GLIAC Tournament

LANSING – The Grand Valley State baseball team defeated Davenport 7-5 in an elimination game in the GLIAC Tournament at Jackson Field in Lansing, Michigan. The Lakers advance to the GLIAC Semifinals tonight at 7:00 PM against Purdue Northwest.
 
Davenport went up 4-0 to open the scoring in the second inning. The Panthers scored four runs off three hits in the inning with two RBI singles and two sacrifice flyouts. The Lakers get on the board in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-3. Nathan Logan and Jonas Gulbrandsen led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Brendan Gucairdo advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt. Next at bat, Connor Schuman singled up the middle to score both Logan and Gulbrandsen, cutting the deficit in half. Later in the inning with runners on first and second, Kyle Nott singled through the left side to score Schuman to bring the Lakers within one. Davenport got a run back in the sixth to make it 5-3 on a sacrifice bunt.
 
The Lakers came roaring back and took a 7-5 lead with a four-run seventh inning. Nott led off the inning with a walk followed by a Logan Anderson single to right field. Logan walked to load the bases with one out and Gulbrandsen delivered with a two-RBI single through the left side to tie the game at five. Next at bat, a wild pitch allowed Logan to score from second to give the Lakers their first lead of the day. Guciardo added to the lead with an RBI single to right field to score Gulbrandsen.
 
Allan Thorington was dominant on the mound in relief for the Lakers, shutting the Panthers down in the final three innings to secure the Laker win. He tossed 7.1 innings allowing just one run off one hit to earn the win. Jonas Gulbrandsen led the Laker offense going 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brendan Guciardo batted 2-4 with an RBI. Connor Schuman hit 1-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Kyle Nott added a hit with a run scored and RBI. Nathan Logan notched a hit with two runs scored and a walk.
