Lakers sweep Parkside Friday Afternoon

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Grand Valley State baseball team swept Parkside on the road Friday (April 7) afternoon at Historic Simmons Field in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Lakers won game one 3-1 before winning game two 7-4. GVSU improves to 18-9 on the season, 7-5 in the GLIAC. 
 
GAME ONE – W, 3-1
 
The Lakers got on the board first in the top of third to take a 1-0 lead. Ayden VanEnkevort led off the inning with a walk and Spencer Nelson singled through the left side. Two batters later, Jonas Gulbrandsen singled through the left side scoring Nelson. Parkside answered in the bottom half of the inning tying the game at one off a Laker error. 
 
The Lakers regained the lead in the sixth inning to go up 2-1. Nelson led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Kyle Nott sacrifice bunt. Nelson would score on the next at bat off a Parkside error. In the seventh inning, Nott launched a solo home run to right center to add an insurance run for the Lakers. That was Nott's second home run of the season.
 
Nick Rutkowski started on the bump and tossed a complete game earning the winto improve to 6-1 on the season. Rutkowski allowed one run that was not earned off two hits and struck out six. Spencer Nelson led the Laker offense going 3-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Jonas Gulbrandsen hit 2-3 with a run batted in and walk. Justin Mansager and Kyle Nott each added a hit. 
 
GAME TWO – W, 7-4
 
It didn't take long for the Lakers to jump to an early lead as Spencer Nelson led off the game with a home run to left field for his fourth of the season. The Lakers would make it 2-0 in the third inning when Connor Schuman singled through the right side scoring Nathan Logan
 
In the fifth inning, the Lakers made it 3-0 on an RBI groundout scoring Nelson. GVSU scored two more runs to make it 5-0 in the sixth inning. Justin Mansager led off the inning with a single up the middle. Next batter, Schuman doubled to left center advancing Mansager to third. Conner McCormack hit a sacrifice flyout to center field that allowed Mansager to score and Schuman to advance to third. Next batter, MacArthur Graybill singled to left field to score Schuman. Parkside got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth with a two-run home run to right field. 
 
The Rangers cut the Laker lead to one in the bottom of the eighth. Sam Leck ended the inning with a strikeout looking with the bases loaded to keep the Lakers in the lead. In the ninth inning, Nelson led off the inning with a single to right center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Nott. Nathan Logan saw the first pitch and launched a two-run home run to left field to put the Lakers up 7-4. That home run was Logan's second of the season. Leck came back on the mound in the bottom half of the ninth and recorded to final three outs to secure the win.
 
Colby Phipps got the start and earned the win to improve to 6-0 on the season. Phipps tossed 7.1 innings allowing four runs (two earned) off ten hits with three strikeouts. Leck earned his third save of the season recording the final five outs. 
 
Spencer Nelson batted 3-5 with a home run, double, and three runs scored. Connor Schuman went 3-4 at the plate with a double, run scored, and run batted in. Nathan Logan hit 2-5 with a home run, three runs batted in, and two runs scored. MacArthur Graybill batted 2-4 with an RBI. Kyle Nott, Justin Mansager, and Conner McCormack each added a hit in the win.
