KENOSHA, Wis. – The Grand Valley State baseball team dropped game one of the four game series at Parkside 14-13 Thursday (April 6) afternoon off a walk off home run. The Lakers fall to 16-9 overall, 5-5 in the GLIAC, while Parkside improves to 8-16, 2-7 in the GLIAC.
GVSU got on the board first in the top of the first.
Spencer Nelson led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Jonas Gulbrandsen notched a two out infield single to score Nelson. Parkside answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run to tie the game at one.
GVSU responded with a four-run inning in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead.
Ayden VanEnkevort and
Justin Mansager led off the inning with back-to-back singles and then stole a base to put runners at second and third.
Kyle Nott scored VanEnkevort on an RBI bunt single. Next batter
Nathan Logan scored Mansager on a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning,
Brendan Guciardo roped a two-RBI double to right field scoring Nott and
Jonas Gulbrandsen. Parkside cut the lead to one with three runs in the bottom half of the second.
The Lakers would add two more runs in the third to increase the lead to 7-4. VanEnkevort and Mansager led off the inning once again with back-to-back singles. VanEnkevort would score on a throwing error by the Rangers. Nelson scored Mansager on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Rangers answered with two runs in the bottom half to cut the lead back to one.
In the fourth inning, the Lakers scored two runs to take a 9-6 lead.
Connor Schuman hit an RBI single through the left side to score Guciardo. Two batters later, Mansager singled up the middle to bring home Schuman. Parkside would score one run in the bottom half to cut the lead to 9-7. The Lakers answered in the fifth with an RBI single up the middle by Guciardo. Nelson made it 11-7 for the Lakers in the sixth inning with a two out RBI single to center field scoring VanEnkevort. Parkside cut the lead back to three in the seventh of an RBI single.
In the eighth inning,
Justin Mansager doubled down the left field line to score Schuman, giving the Lakers a 12-8 lead. The rangers cut the lead to one after bringing across three runs in the bottom half.
Jake Rydquist gave the Lakers an insurance run with a solo home run to left field in the ninth. The home run was his first of the season as the Lakers led 13-11 heading to the bottom of the ninth. The Rangers hit a walk off three-run home runto win the game 14-13.
Justin Mansager led the Lakers going 4-5 at the plate with double, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.
Ayden VanEnkevort hit 3-5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Connor Schuman went 3-6 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Brendan Guciardo led the Lakers with three runs batted in going 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
Jake Rydquist launched his first home run of the season and batted 2-5 with a walk. Jonas Gulbrandsssen added two hits with a run scored and run batted in.
Logan Wynalda was tabbed with the loss.
