GVSU Drops A Pair Of GLIAC Games To #12 Wayne State, 7-1 and 12-8

CF Spencer Nelson ties single-game record with three home runs in game two

Grand Valley State (16-8, 5-4) dropped a pair of GLIAC tilts Monday afternoon at the GVSU Baseball Field to #12 Wayne State (22-3, 9-0). The Warriors won game one 7-1, followed by a 12-8 victory in game two. GVSU will hit the road for a GLIAC four-game series at Wisconsin-Parkside Thursday (April 6) through Saturday (April 8) in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Game 1
Wayne State jumped out early on the Lakers with five runs in the first two innings, four of which were unearned due to the three Laker errors. GVSU's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth when CF Spencer Nelson doubled and scored on a double by LF Kyle Nott. Nott was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, Nelson was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Senior Rylan Peets was tagged with the loss, yielding six runs, three of which were earned, on six hits with five strikeouts.

Game 2
Spencer Nelson hit a solo home run on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first to left center, followed by a Kyle Nott walk. Nott advanced to second on a Nate Logan walk and then stole third base. C Brendan Guciardo scored Nott on a ground out to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Wayne State scored six runs in the top of the second to take a 6-2 lead. Nelson launched his second HR of the game left field in the bottom of the fourth to pull the Lakers within three (6-3), but Wayne State pushed across two runs in top of the fifth with a two-out single to up the lead to 8-3. WSU added three runs in the top of the sixth to increase the advantage to 11-3. Nelson tied a GVSU single-game record with his third home run of the game, this one going over the right field wall.  Matthew Reno belted three home runs in a game during the 1984 season. Nott drove in a pair with a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth and GVSU added two more in the bottom of the ninth on a MacArthur Graybill RBI double and a Justin Mansager RBI single.

GVSU pounded out 14 hits in game two, highlighted by Nelson's 3-for-5 outing with three home runs. Nott was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and 3B Jonas Gulbransen collected three hits and scored a run. RF Justin Mansager also tallied a pair of hits, scored a run and drove in a run. Allan Thorington was tagged with the loss for the Lakers.
