Laker Softball Sweeps Parkside

KENOSHA, Wisc.—The Grand Valley State softball team swept Parkside on Saturday afternoon, shutting out the Rangers in both games.
 
The Lakers won via run-rule in the first game, 9-0, in five innings and beat Parkside, 5-0, in the second game.
 
GVSU (38-4, 20-1 GLIAC) completed a regular-season sweep of Parkside (16-30, 7-17) and outscored the Rangers 34-2 over 23 innings of play across four games.
 
The Lakers earned their 20th GLIAC victory of the season, which marks the fifth straight GLIAC season in which GVSU has won 20 games or more.
 
Game One – GVSU 9, Parkside 0 (5 Innings)
 
The Lakers had four multi-run innings to beat the Rangers in the first game of the day.
 
Lydia Goble kept up her momentum from breaking the GVSU career hits record on Friday. She hit an RBI triple in the first inning to drive in Joanna Cirrincione. Morgan Wagner grounded out in the next at-bat, but Goble scored, making it, 2-0, Lakers after one inning.
 
Goble kicked off the scoring efforts in the third inning, hitting a double to right-center field to bring home Kaitlin Lynch. Kelsey Komorous brought Goble in with an RBI single to right field. GVSU led, 4-0, after three innings.
 
The Lakers came back in the fourth inning with the bats yet to have cooled off. Eliana Eiland hit the second GVSU triple of the game to score Hannah Hollister. Megan Koenigshof singled to left field in the next at-bat to bring Eiland in. Goble hit her second RBI double of the game to plate Koenigshof, giving the Lakers a, 7-0, lead after four innings.
 
GVSU scored twice in the fifth and final inning to cap off a run-rule victory. Morgan Spicer hit an RBI triple to score Komorous and Hollister brought home Spicer with an RBI single, capping off the 9-0 victory.
 
Goble went 3-for-3 in the batter's box with three RBI and scored two runs.
 
Hannah Beatus was on fire early, striking out nine of her first 10 batters faced. She only allowed three hits and totaled 11 strikeouts in five innings of work. Beatus picked up her 20th victory of the season with her victorious effort.
 
Game Two – GVSU 5, Parkside 0
 
Ashley Platek brought a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but saw it broken up on the final out.
 
Platek tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just the one hit. She issued two walks and struck out two batters. The Laker defense was solid not committing a single error on 19 balls put in play.
 
The GVSU offense offered early support, putting up three first-inning runs.
 
Morgan Wagner doubled in Joanna Cirrincione to open the scoring. Kelsey Komorous was up next and sent the ball over the right-field fence for her second home run of the season. The home run put GVSU up, 3-0.
 
Wagner would drive in the other pair of runs for the Lakers. She doubled down the right-field line to plate Cirrincione and Lydia Goble. Wagner's RBI double wrapped up the scoring efforts for the Lakers, capping off a, 5-0, victory.
 
Wagner went 2-for-4 for the Lakers, had three RBI and score once.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Lakers close out the regular season with a doubleheader against Ferris State. They will resume the second game of April 3's doubleheader and play the second game of April 16's doubleheader, both of which were postponed due to rain. 
 
Action on Sunday begins at 2 p.m. at the GVSU Softball Field.
