Lakers Beat Wayne State Twice Via Run-Rule

DETROIT—The Grand Valley State softball team beat Wayne State twice via the run-rule to complete a regular season sweep of the Warriors on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Lakers beat the Warriors, 10-2, in five innings in the first game and won the second game, 9-1, in six innings.
 
GVSU (35-3, 17-0 GLIAC) beat Wayne State (16-26, 5-15) via the run-rule three times this season.
 
Game One – GVSU 10, Wayne State 2 (5 Innings)
 
The Laker offense was active in game one and got going early.
 
Joanna Cirrincione was the second batter of the game and she doubled to left field, scoring Kaitlin Lynch who singled to start the game.
 
Lydia Goble hit a sacrifice fly to bring Cirrincione in, giving GVSU a, 2-0, lead after the first inning.
 
Cirrrincione picked up her second RBI of the game in the second inning, singling to second base and driving in Lynch for a, 3-0, lead.
 
The Warriors would respond with a two-run double in the bottom of the second inning to make it, 3-2.
 
GVSU came back and scored three runs in the top of the third inning.
 
Morgan Spicer doubled to center field, plating Alexis McCullough, who came in to pinch run for Kelsey Komorous.
 
Megan Koenigshof stepped up to the plate with two runners on. She tripled to left-center field and drove in Hannah Hollister and Spicer, giving the Lakers a, 6-2, lead.
 
The Lakers popped off for four more runs in the top of the fifth inning.
 
Cirrincione kicked off the scoring in the fifth with her third RBI of the game. She singled up the middle to plate Koenigshof.
 
Goble then tripled down the right-field line to bring in Cirrincione and Lynch. She ended game one with three RBI.
 
In the next at-bat, Morgan Wagner singled to plate Goble for the final run of the game at, 10-2.
 
Hannah Beatus continued her excellent season from the circle, tossing all five innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. She struck out six batters and picked up her 18th victory of the year.
 
Game Two – GVSU 9, Wayne State 1 (6 Innings)
 
The Laker offense didn't cool off between games, putting up nine runs to win via run-rule again in game two.
 
GVSU got going early once again, putting up three runs in the top of the first inning.
 
Morgan Wagner singled to shortstop, bringing in Joanna Cirrincione to get the Lakers on the board.
 
Kelsey Komorous stepped into the batter's box next and hit a double to center field, scoring Wagner.
 
Morgan Spicer got Komorous home with a triple to right-center field, giving the Lakers a, 3-0, lead after the top half of the first inning.
 
Wayne State scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly, making it a, 3-1, game.
 
Goble picked up another RBI with a single through the left side to kick off scoring in the second inning. Hannah Hollister scored on Goble's single.
 
Komorous hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Kaitlin Lynch, giving the Lakers a, 5-1, lead.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, Goble launched a ball over the left-field fence for her fourth home run of the season. Her solo home run gave GVSU a, 6-1, lead. Eliana Eiland followed up with an RBI double to right-center field, bringing home Alexis McCullough for a, 7-1, lead.
 
Goble singled home Hollister in the top of the fifth for her third RBI of the game and sixth of the day, making it an, 8-1, lead.
 
In the sixth inning, Kaitlin Lynch singled down the left-field line with the bases loaded, bringing in Komorous for the final run of the game and a, 9-1, GVSU advantage.
 
Ashley Platek took to the circle for GVSU, pitching six innings and allowing just one earned run on two hits. She struck out three and walked three in her 12th win of the season.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Lakers travel to Hammond, Indiana, for a doubleheader against Purdue Northwest on Friday. GVSU then faces off against Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Saturday before returning home for a doubleheader against Ferris State on Sunday.
