Record Shattered at Al Owens Classic

Eli Kosiba breaks Grand Valley State record in men's high jump

ALLENDALE, MICH. – Grand Valley State junior, Eli Kosiba, broke the Grand Valley State school record in the men's high jump (outdoor) on Friday, April 21st at the annual Al Owens classic clearing a new personal-best height of 2.25m. The previous school record was set by Kosiba last season with a height of 2.21m. In addition, Kosiba holds the school record in the men's high jump (indoor) with a height of 2.23m. 
 
Eli Kosiba took home a first-place finish with a height of 2.25m followed by Jonathan Rankins-James in second clearing a height of 2.10m, both surpassing the Division II provisional mark. Kosiba remains in the No. 1 spot on the National List for Division II and currently would claim a No. 1 spot on the National List in Division I. 
 
In the men's pole vault, James Nutt and Colton Emeott finished back-to-back for the Lakers, claiming first (Nutt) and second (Emeott). Nutt recorded a new personal-best height of 4.92m, while Emeott cleared a height of 4.77m. For the women, the Lakers claimed three Top-5 finishes in the pole vault. Kassidie Stimmel in second with a height of 3.77m, Taylor DeHommel in third with a height of 3.62m and Miranda Firari in fourth with a height of 3.62m. 
 
Luke Jelderks, Chanse Setzke and Caleb Taylor claimed second through fourth in the men's long jump at the Al Owens Classic. Jelderks finishing in second recording a new personal-best distance of 7.33m, Setzke in third with a distance of 7.08m and Taylor in fourth with a distance of 6.86m.
 
For the throws team, Judith Essemiah claimed first-place in the women's hammer throw invite with a distance of 60.94m followed by Shelby Ulven finished third with a throw of 54.65m. Emma Richards took home first in the women's shot put recording a distance of 15.67m while Erika Beistle claimed fourth with a distance of 13.65m. On the men's side, Myles Kerner finished first in the men's shot put invite throwing a distance of 19.54m. Bobby Maxwell placed first in the javelin throw with a distance of 59.13m. 

On the track, the women's relay squad consisting of Angelica Floyd, Melia Williams, Timia Robinson and Kate Zang recorded a first-place finish in the 4x100m relays with a time of 46.89. In addition, Zang, Floyd, Williams and Robinson placed within the Top 10 in the women's 100m dash. Zang finishing in first with a time of 12.05, Floyd in second with a time of 12.19, Williams in fifth in a time of 12.26 and Robinson finishing it out in seventh with a time of 12.43. In the hurdles, Brooke Barkocy placed first in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.12 and third in the 400m hurdles with a time 1:05.67. 
 
Jacody Sikora claimed two first-place finishes at the Al Owens Classic, the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.50 and the 200m dash in a time of 21.15. In the 200m dash, the Laker men earned six Top 10 finishes including Sikora's first place finish. Myles Rhodes placed second with a time of 21.28, Jackson Blanchard in fourth (21.61), Brett Baine in sixth (21.83), Antonio Passarelli in ninth (21.89) and Nicholas Walper in tenth (21.98). 
 
Grand Valley State will remain at home next weekend as they host the GVSU Extra-Weekend Meet on Saturday, April 29th beginning at 12:00 p.m.
