Lakers Sweep Parkside in Home Opener Sunday

Improve to 5-2 in the GLIAC, 16-6 overall

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State baseball team opened up their home schedule with a doubleheader sweep over Parkside Sunday (April 2) afternoon. The Lakers won game one 7-2 and took game 8-3 to improve to 5-2 in the GLIAC, 16-6 overall. 
 
GAME ONE – W, 7-2
 
Parkside got the scoring started in the top of the second inning on a solo home run to left field. The Lakers tied the game at one in the third inning. After Ayden VanEnkevort and Spencer Nelson each walked, Nathan Logan drove home VanEnkevort on an RBI single to left center. GVSU would take a 2-1 lead in the next inning off a Brendan Guciardo soloe home run to left field. That home run was his second of the season. 
 
In the fifth inning, the Lakers tacked on three runs to increase the lead to four. Justin Mansager led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second on the next at bat. Two batters later, Kyle Nott tripled down the right field line to make it a 3-1 lead. Very next at bat, Nathan Logan tripled to right center to bring home Nott. Logan would score off a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 5-1 Lakers. 
 
Parkside got a run back in the sixth off a Lakers error, but GVSU would respond in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to make it 7-2. The Lakers loaded the bases for Spencer Nelson who notched a two RBI single to center field scoring Schuman and VanEnkevort. 
 
Nick Rutkowski got the start on the mound and earned his fifth win (5-1) in five consecutive starts. Rutkowski tossed six innings allowing just one earned run off five hits with a season high eight strikeouts. Logan Wynalda recorded the final three outs tossing a scoreless inning of relief. 
 
Nathan Logan led the offense going 2-3 at the plate with a triple and two runs batted in. Spencer Nelson batted 1-2 with two runs batted in and two walks. Brendan Guciardo launched his second home run of the season and Ayden VanEnkevort hit 1-2 with two runs scored and a walk. 
 
GAME TWO – W, 8-3
 
Parkside got on the scoreboard first in the first inning again off a solo home run to right field. The Lakers got on the board in the third inning by bringing across four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Justin Mansager led off the inning with a single to center field. Two batters later, Spencer Nelson singled to left field to advance Mansager to third. Kyle Nott drove home Mansager next at bat with a bunt single towards the first base line. Nathan Logan would give the Lakers the lead with an RBI single through the right side to score Nelson. Next at bat Brendan Guciardo notched a double down the left field line to score Nott. Jake Rydquist singled to right field next at bat to score Logan and increase the lead to 4-1. 
 
Parkside would cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth inning with a two-run inning. GVSU got a run back to make it 5-3 in the bottom half of the inning. Ayden VanEnkevort drew a bases loaded walk with two outs that scored Logan. 
 
The Lakers would add three more runs in the seventh inning to take an 8-3 lead. Guciardo doubled to right center for his second double of the game. Mike Morawski came in as a pinch runner and scored two batters later off an RBI single up the middle by Connor Schuman. Later in the inning, MacArthur Graybill doubled down the left field line to score Schuman and Mansager. 
 
Colby Phipps started on the bump for the Lakers in game two and improved to 5-0 on the season after tossing seven innings allowing just one earned run off six hits. Phipps notched six strikeouts and walked just two batters. Josh Schell tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief allowing just one hit. Logan Wynalda threw one pitch that ended up being a game ending double play. 
 
The Lakers out hit Parkside 13-7 in game two as five players notched multiple hits. Connor Schuman went 2-3 with a run scored and run batted in. Brendan Guciardo hit 2-4 with two doubles and a run batted in. MacArthur Graybill went 2-4 at the plate with a double and two runs batted in. Spencer Nelson and Nathan Logan each went 2-5 in the win.
