ALLENDALE, MICH. – For the second time in a five day span, the Grand Valley women's lacrosse team took on Davenport, and for the second time, the Lakers came away victorious. In their final regular season home game of the year, GVSU held Senior Day festivities before the game, honoring seven seniors, the picked up their eighth straight win, dispatching Davenport 14-5.
Prior to the game, the program celebrated the careers of
Maggie Hammer,
Shae Strehl,
Kate DeYoung,
Audrey Maloney,
Molly Bursinger,
Anna Reynolds, and
Clare Johnston. The group has won 59 games and two GLIAC regular season and tournament titles as well as the only NCAA Tournament win in program history.
After Davenport got on the board first, it was all GVSU the rest of the way. The Lakers ended the first quarter with goals from Hammer, Bursinger, and
Grace Bancroft, who got an assist from Hammer, to put GV up 3-1 after 15 minutes of play.
The scoring run continued into the second quarter, as GVSU outscored DU 4-0 in the period. Hammer found Bursinger to open the scoring before Hammer got one of her own.
Maddy Champagne then scored two straight, getting assisted by
Ashleigh Rothe and Bursinger, to put the Lakers up 7-1 at the half.
Rothe then began the third with two goals of her own, scoring one unassisted and the other getting an assist from Hammer. Hammer then found Champagne for another goal, before she scored one herself, then Bursinger scored another. The Panthers got back on the board before the end of the quarter, but still trailed 12-2.
Maggie Hammer dished out another assist to begin the fourth, finding Champagne to make it 13-2. The Panthers scored once more, before
Ella Boose scored her first goal of the contest off a pass from Bursinger. Davenport scored twice to end the game, but still fell for the 12
th straight time to GVSU.
Maddy Champagne scored four times and grabbed 13 draw controls, tying a GVSU single-game record.
Molly Bursinger and
Maggie Hammer each tallied hat tricks, with Bursinger dishing out two assists, and Hammer recording five assists.
Ashleigh Rothe scored twice and had one assist, while
Grace Bancroft and
Ella Boose each scored one goal. Grand Valley won the draw control battle 21-1 behind Champagne's 13 and Bursinger's six.
Audrey Maloney picked up the win by saving three shots and picking up two groundballs.
