GVSU Dominates Mercyhurst Despite Wintery Conditions

ALLENDALE, MICH. - On a snowy Sunday afternoon, the Grand Valley women's lacrosse team was red hot, scoring 17 goals in a dominating 17-2 victory over Mercyhurst.

Maggie Hammer struck first for the Lakers, getting a pass from Molly Bursinger to open up the scoring. That was quickly followed by unassisted goals from Bursinger and Maddy Champagne to make it 3-0 GVSU. Mercyhurst got one back to end the quarter, but still trailed 3-1.

GVSU got three straight goals to open up the second quarter, as Sydney Stone scored an unassisted goal, then Kate DeYoung found Bursinger for another goal, and the run was capped off when Stone found Champagne, making it 6-1 GVSU. Mercyhurst found the back of the net to cut into their deficit, but three more Laker goals to end the half gave GVSU a comfortable lead at the break, as DeYoung scored unassisted and Hammer scored twice, once off an assist from Stone and the second was unassisted, just 11 seconds before the end of the half, as GVSU led 9-2.

The second half was all GVSU, as they outscored Mercyhurst 8-0 over the final 30 minutes of play. In the third quarter, DeYoung, Stone, Bursinger, Grace Bancroft, and Hammer all scored goals to put the Lakers up 14-2 and created a running clock for the rest of the game.

In the fourth, Ellie Bernard found Hammer, who scored her fifth goal of the game, before Bursinger assisted a Hailey Crittenden goal. The scoring was finished off by an unassisted goal from Champagne, as GVSU cruised to the win.

The defense was phenomenal all day, led by Sarah Krause making her first career start in net, as she picked up the win and saved five shots on the day. In front of her, Kylie Waeghe picked up three groundballs and caused a turnover, while Aislynn Alkire fielded two groundballs.

Maggie Hammer led the way offensively, scoring five goals. Maddy Champagne and Molly Bursinger also recorded hat tricks, scoring three goals each. Kate DeYoung and Syndey Stone scored twice, while Hailey Crittenden and Grace Bancroft each scored once. Bursinger and Stone each tallied two assists, while DeYoung and Ellie Bernard had one. Stone nabbed four draw controls and Champagne grabbed two.
