Lakers Run-Rule Pitt-Johnstown, Shut Out SW Minnesota State To Close The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla.—The Grand Valley State softball team won its seventh and eighth straight games, beating Pitt-Johnstown, 15-5, and defeating Southwest Minnesota State, 4-0.
 
The Lakers (15-2) rattled off eight straight wins to finish competition at The Spring Games with a 10-2 record. GVSU outscored its opponents 73-23 and shut out five of its 12 opponents. The Lakers also won two games via the run-rule.
 
GAME 1 – GVSU 15, Pittsburgh at Johnstown 5
 
The Laker offense was working early on against Pitt-Johnstown.
 
GVSU hung a seven-spot in the top of the first inning. The Lakers drew five walks with the bases loaded to earn five of their seven first-inning runs. Joanna Cirrincione singled for an RBI and a Hannah Hollister fielder's choice also drove in a run for GVSU. 
 
The Laker offense was back at it in the third inning, this time putting up six runs. Morgan Spicer hit a two-RBI double to drive in Morgan Wagner and Lydia Goble. Spicer would score along with Cirrincione on a Liberti Fair single to center field, making it an, 11-0, Laker lead. Hollister capped off the inning with a two-RBI single to center field, making it a, 13-0, game.
 
In the next inning, Cirrincione hit an infield single that scored Goble to balloon the lead to, 14-0.
 
After Pitt-Johnstown answered with four runs of their own in the fourth inning, Wagner drove in Goble with an RBI single to left field to cap off the scoring day for GVSU and making it a, 15-4, lead.
 
Pitt-Johnstown put up on run in the home half of the fifth inning, but were unable to avoid the run-rule.
 
Cirrincione went 5-for-5 for GVSU, scored twice and drove in two runs. Hollister drove in three runs on her two hits and Wagner drove in two runs with her 2-for-2 hitting performance.
 
Nevaeh Ingram started in the circle for GVSU, going five innings for the Lakers. Ingram allowed five runs on eight hits. She struck out one batter and issued five walks.
 
GAME 2 – GVSU 4, Southwest Minnesota State 0
 
GVSU's bats didn't cool off between the first and second game of the day.
 
The Lakers scored twice in the first inning. Morgan Wagner hit a double to right field to score Lydia Goble, making it, 1-0, GVSU. After a Joanna Cirrincione infield single, she stole second base and Wagner made it home in Southwest Minnesota State's attempt to throw CIrrincione out at second.
 
Wagner drove in another run for the Lakers in the third inning. She hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Goble and give GVSU a, 3-0, lead.
 
 
The Lakers loaded the bases in the fifth inning and took advantage. Morgan Spicer hit a ground ball to shortstop who made a putout at second base. Goble scored her third run of the game on the play.
 
Ashley Platek kept SWMSU off the scoreboard, throwing a complete-game shutout. In her seven innings of work, Platek allowed just two hits and walked one batter. She also struck out one SWMSU batter. Platek picked up her sixth victory of the season on Saturday.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Lakers (15-2) complete their Spring Break trip, going 10-2 in their 12 games in Florida. GVSU returns to the diamond with a trio of doubleheaders next weekend against teams from The Buckeye State. 
 
GVSU takes on Ohio Dominican at 3 p.m. on Friday for a doubleheader in Columbus, Ohio. The Lakers will play Cedarville on Saturday and Tiffin on Sunday.
