Big Ninth Inning Fuels Lakers Over Ashland Friday

Lakers score seven runs in the ninth inning for come from behind win

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Grand Valley State baseball team scored seven runs in the ninth inning to claim a 14-13 comeback victory against regional foe Ashland at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven, Florida. The Lakers improve to 6-4 on the season, while Ashland falls to 7-4. 
 
The Lakers put up a season high 14 runs off 20 hits. GVSU got off to a fast start by taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After a Kyle Nott bunt single and Nathan Logan walk, Jake Rydquist singled through the left side to score Nott. Next batter, Ayden VanEnkevort singled through the left side to score Logan. Brendan Guciardo made it 3-0 in the second inning by launching his first home run of the season to left field. 
 
Ashland answered in the bottom half of the third inning with two runs to cut the Laker lead to 3-2. GVSU responded by scoring two runs in the fourth inning to regain a three-run lead. Connor Schuman led off the inning with a double and next batter Jonas Gulbrandsen doubled to left center to score Schuman. After Justin Mansager singled on a bunt to advance Gulbrandsen to third, Gulbrandsen would score next at bat off an Ashland error. 
 
Ashland would take the lead at 9-5 off a seven-run sixth inning. The Eagles compiled seven hits in the inning including a three-run home run to right field. The Lakers would be able to cut the lead in half in the eighth inning with two huge runs with two outs. Justin Mansager singled through the right side scoring Guciardo and Gulbrandsen to make it 9-7 Ashland heading into the ninth inning.
 
In the ninth inning and down to their final three outs, Kyle Nott led off the inning with a solo home run to right field to get the Lakers within one. That was Nott's first home run of the season. With two out and nobody on base, VanEnkevort doubled to center field to keep the Lakers alive. Next batter, Connor Schuman smoked a triple to center field to tie the game at nine. Gulbrandsen gave the Lakers the lead next at bat with an RBI single down the left field line. Guciardo kept the inning going with a single through the right side and an error by Ashland allowed Gulbrandsen to score to increase the lead to 11-9. Mansager singled to left field to score Guciardo making it 12-9. After a Spencer Nelson walk, Ashland made two errors that scored both Mansager and Nelson to give the Lakers a 14-9 lead heading to the bottom half of the ninth.
 
Ashland would load the bases and with two outs hit grand slam to cut the Laker lead to one, but Sam Leck would get the final three outs, including two strikeouts to secure the win. Rylan Peets got the start on the bump and tossed 5.1 innings pitched allowing six runs off eight hits, while striking out six. Logan Wynalda earned the win (1-0) after tossing 2.2 innings of relief allowing three runs off six hits. 
 
A total of seven Lakers recorded multiple hits in the win, led by Justin Mansager who went 4-5 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Jonas Gulbrandsen and Brendan Guciardo each batted 3-5 with three runs scored, while Gulbrandsen added two RBI's and Guciardo launched his first home run of the season. Kyle Nott hit 3-6 at the dish with a solo home run and two runs scored. Jake Rydquist, Ayden VanEnkevort, and Connor Schuman each went 2-5 with one run batted in. 
 
The Lakers will continue their spring trip in Florida tomorrow (March 11) when they face Wilmington (Del.) in a doubleheader at Lake Myrtle Sport Complex in Auburndale, Florida.
