Lakers Sweep Wilmington (Del.) in Doubleheader Saturday

Rutkowski and Phipps each throw complete game

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Grand Valley State baseball team swept Wilmington (Del.) on Saturday (March 11) behind two complete pitching games by Nick Rutkowski and Colby Phipps. The Lakers won game one 2-0 before winning game two 4-2 in eight innings. The Lakers improved to 8-4 on the season, while Wilmington (Del.) fell to 5-7. 
 
Game One – W, 2-0
 
The Lakers scored the only two runs of the game in the second inning. After Ayden VanEnkevort reached on an error and Jake Rydquist walk, Jonas Gulbrandsen singled to right center to score VanbEnkevort. Next batter, Connor Schuman brought home Rydquist with an RBI groundout. 
 
The was all the Lakers needed as Nick Rutkowski pitched a complete game shutout. Rutkowski managed to escape out of two jams with runners on first and third with one out. The junior allowed just five hits, while striking out three, earning his second win of the season.
 
Gulbrandsen led the Lakers by going 1-1 in game one with an RBI and walk. Jake Rydquist added a double and scored a run.
 
Game Two – W, 4-2 (8-Innings)
 
The Lakers won game two in extra innings. GVSU jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Nathan Logan scored Kyle Nott off an RBI groundout. Wilmington (Del.) tied the game at one in the third inning with an RBI double to left field. The Lakers regained the lead in the fifth inning making it 2-1. Spencer Nelson doubled through the left side and later scored off a Jonas Gulbrandsen single to right field. Wilmington (Del.) answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at two off an RBI single to left center.
 
After two scoreless innings, the game went to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Connor Schuman doubled to right center. After a lineout to make it two outs, Mike Morawski kept the inning alive with an infield single to the second baseman. Next batter, MacArthur Graybill drew a walk to load the bases. Spencer Nelson came up clutch with a ground rule double to left field that put GVSU up 4-2. Colby Phipps came in and shut the door in the bottom half of the inning to secure the Laker win.
 
Phipps got the start on the mound and went the distance tossing eight innings to earn his second win of the season. Phipps recorded six strikeouts with zero walks, allowing eight hits. Offensively, Spencer Nelson led the Lakers going 3-4 at the plate with two RBI's and a run scored. Kyle Nott hit 2-5 with a run scored, while Connor Schuman batted 1-2 with a run scored and two walks. 
 
The Lakers will close their spring trip in the sunshine state tomorrow (March 12) when they face Wayne State (Neb.) at 10:00 AM at Bing Tyus Yard on the campus of Polk State College. Follow @gvsubaseball on Twitter for live in-game updates.
