GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. – Last Saturday the women used a big second half to pull away from Parkside, but this week, the Lakers had a dominant first half, holding Davenport to only eight points, as they came away with a 68-46 victory.
GVSU got out to a hot start once again versus the Panthers, starting the game on an 11-0 run, with six of those points being scored by
Ellie Droste. Davenport was able to get on the board with two free throws and make it 11-2. Layups from
Hannah Kulas and
Megan Crow closed out the quarter with the Lakers up 15-2.
The Lakers stayed hot, scoring the first 16 points of the second quarter, as
Paige Vanstee led the charge with six points during the run. Down 31-2, Davenport hit a three for their first made field goal of the game and would hit another after two
Rylie Bisballe free throws to make it 33-8 heading into the break. Davenport only shot 8.7% from the field in the first half. This was the second time this season, GVSU has allowed less than 10 points in a half, along with the Grace Christian game.
Nicole Kamin got the scoring started in the third quarter, as she buried a triple to make it 36-8. Davenport scored four straight points before a three from
Emily Spitzley stopped the run and made it 39-12. From there the two teams traded points, with Droste hitting a jumper to make it 49-24 with a quarter left to play.
Kulas and Vanstee each scored four points early in the fourth quarter to push the lead up to 59-30. The Panthers went on a 13-2 scoring run after that to cut into the lead, but that was as close they would get the rest of the way, as the GVSU bench closed out the game, getting buckets from
Molly Anderson and
Avery Zeinstra, as well as two free throws from
Haley Swing to secure the season sweep of the Panthers.
Ellie Droste led a balanced Laker attack, scoring 13 points, and shooting a perfect 4-4 from both the field and the free throw line.
Paige Vanstee and
Hannah Kulas both added 10 points each.
Rylie Bisballe just missed a double-double, with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Courtney Sharland had six rebounds.
