Lakers drop doubleheader at Indianapolis

Close out series tomorrow at 12 pm

INDIANAPOLIS – The Grand Valley State baseball team dropped both games in today's doubleheader against Indianapolis to open the 2023 season. The Lakers will close the three-game series against the Greyhounds tomorrow (Feb. 26) at 12:00 PM at Greyhound Park.
 
Game One – L, 4-2
 
Indianapolis got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the third inning and then added another in the fourth inning. The Lakers scored twice in the seventh inning. Jake Rydquist tripled and scored on a wild pitch followed by Kyle Nott scoring on a wild pitch.
 
Nick Rutkowski got the start on the mound and suffered the loss after tossing six innings allowing four runs off six hits. Rydquist led the Lakers with two hits, while Spencer Nelson and Brendan Guciardo each recorded a hit. 
 
Game Two – L, 10-8
 
The Lakers got on the board early in the top of the first inning. Spencer Nelson, Kyle Nott, and Nathan Logan singled to load the bases for Logan Anderson who got hit by the pitch to score Nelson. The Greyhounds responded in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at one. Indianapolis took the lead in the second inning off a three-run homerun to make it 4-1.
 
The Lakers would respond with two runs in the top of the third inning to make it 4-3. Nelson led the inning off with a double. Two batter later, Logan tripled to score Nelson and would score on the next at-bat off a Greyhound off a Jake Rydquist RBI. 
 
Indianapolis regained their three-run lead in the fourth inning off back-to-back homeruns. The Greyhounds would add two more runs to make it 8-3 in the fifth inning off a two-run homerun. 
 
GVSU scored four runs in the seventh inning to make it a one-run game. After back-to-back walks by Logan and Rydquist. Justin Mansager singled through the right side, scoring Logan. Next batter, Connor Schuman singled to center field to bring home Rydquist. Two batters later, freshman Ayden VanEnkevort tripled to right center bringing home Mansager and Schuman for his first two collegiate RBI's. The Lakers would tie the game in the eighth inning off a Logan solo homerun to center field. The Greyhounds responded with two runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning to regain the lead at 10-8.
 
The Lakers were led by Nate Logan who went 3-3 with a home run, triple, three runs scored, and three runs batted in. Ayden VanEnkevort 3-5 with two RBIs in his first collegiate game. Connor Schuman went 2-3 at the dish with a run scored and RBI, while Spencer Nelson notched two hits and scored twice.
 
Rylan Peets got the start on the mound and pitched 4.1 innings allowing eight runs off eight hits. Owen Avery pitched two scoreless innings of relief in his first collegiate game. Sam Leck suffered the loss after tossing one inning.
