ALLENDALE, MICH. – Following their 77-42 victory over LSSU, the Grand Valley State women's basketball team clinched their second consecutive GLIAC regular season championship and the 12
th in program history.
Grand Valley got off to a blistering start to the game, jumping all over LSSU to the tune of a 15-2 lead, less than four minutes into the game. The lead got pushed to 20-4 after an
Ellie Droste triple and was 20-9 after the first quarter.
Lake State brought it back within single digits to open the second quarter, but GVSU responded with an 11-2 run, with Droste scoring nine of those points, hitting three consecutive triples. The two teams traded baskets to end the half, with GVSU up 35-21.
GVSU opened the second half with three more three-pointers, two more from Droste and one from
Emily Spitzley. The lead got dropped to 12 at 46-34, but a 10-3 run to end the quarter pushed the lead to 56-37 heading into the fourth.
That momentum carried over into the fourth quarter, as Grand Valley outscored Lake State 21-5 in the final 10 minutes of play to ice the game. The win moves the Lakers to 25-2 this season and 16-1 in GLIAC play, as they locked up the regular season title and the number one seed in next week's conference tournament.
Ellie Droste led the way with a season-high 23 points, knocking down seven three-pointers.
Emily Spitzley added 12 points and five assists, while
Nicole Kamin had 10 points and five rebounds. The defense forced 20 turnovers and held LSSU to only 27.2% shooting from the field.
