ALLENDALE, MICH. – The final road trip of the regular season has arrived for the Grand Valley State women's basketball team, as they head out to Saginaw Valley on Thursday, followed by a trip to the 313 to play Wayne State on Saturday.
With four games left to play in the regular season, GVSU holds a one and a half game lead over Michigan Tech in the GLIAC standings and a two-game lead over Parkside. The Lakers are coming off a weekend sweep of Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan, moving them to 22-2 this season and 13-1 in league play. In the win over the Huskies, GVSU used a big second quarter to take a double-digit lead and took care of business from there, winning 60-43. It was a similar story against Northern Michigan, as they outscored the Wildcats by 14 points in the second quarter and withstood a second half run to win 64-52 on Sawyers Day. The win marked the 200th victory for
Mike Williams as the coach at GVSU.
The Lakers beat both the Saginaw Valley and Wayne State earlier this season when the two teams visited Allendale. GVSU defeated SVSU in the Battle of the Valleys 71-32, shutting down the Cardinals offense, holding them to 18.9% shooting from the field.
Emily Spitzley and
Paige Vanstee led the way offensively for the Lakers, scoring 12 points each. Against Wayne State, the Lakers had another strong defensive effort, winning 81-44, as the Warriors only shot 10.5% from three in the game.
Nicole Kamin was the leading scorer with 15 points, while Spitzley had 14 for the Lakers. GVSU dominated the glass, outrebounding the Warriors 48-29.
Saginaw Valley comes into the game winners of six of the last seven games, only losing on the road at Michigan Tech. The Cardinals are 14-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play, holding a one game lead on Northern Michigan for the fourth spot in the standings. The Cardinals boast two the league's leading scorers in Kaitlyn Zarycki, second in the conference with 20.3 ppg, and Tori DePerry is fifth in the conference at 17.5 ppg. DePerry is also fourth in rebounding with 8.6 boards a contest. This will be the 101
st meeting all-time between these two rivals, with GVSU leading the series 64-36, and have won 10 of the last 11.
In the final road game of the regular season, the Lakers travel to the east side to play Wayne State for the second time this season. The Warriors are 12-10 overall and 5-9 in conference and are in seventh place in the standings. WSU have lost three of their last five games and are only 7-5 at home this season. Wayne has three players in double-figures this season, led by Becca Fugate's 13.9 points, who is also their leading rebounder at 6.3 rebounds a contest. This matchup will be the 85
th all-time between these two, with GVSU leading 59-26 and have won the past 17 games.
