Lakers Sweep Distance Medley Relay

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Lakers close out their annual GVSU Big Meet on Saturday, February 11th after hosting over 100 teams from all over the country. Grand Valley State did not disappoint this weekend as they broke a total of six records at the Big Meet. Myles Kerner earned three of those six records at Friday's meet in the men's shot put invite with a new personal-best distance of 19.57m. while the remaining three records come from the women's distance medley relay squad.
 
Klaudia O'Malley, Taryn Chapko, Natalie Graber and Kate Zang are now ranked first on the National List after winning the distance medley relay on Saturday with a personal-best time 11:18.68. O'Malley, Chapko, Graber and Zang are now the current recorder holders for the DMR in the GVSU school records, Kelly Family Sports Center records and The Big Meet records. The previous Kelly record and Big Meet record was held by Grand Valley State in 2019 with a time of 11:27.31 while the GVSU school record was held in 2012 with a time of 11:23.35. 
 
On the men's side, the distance medley relay team made up of Scott Spaanstra, Caleb Futter, Nick Hoffman and Myles Rhodes took home first place for the Lakers crossing the line with a time of 9:48.44. This first-place finish ranks the Lakers first on the National List in the men's DMR in addition to hitting the NCAA Division II provisional mark. 
 
"Our women raced a spectacular DMR relay, to do that in a solo effort is simply spectacular. This was a great weekend of competition for our entire squad. Myles Kerner shot put mark was incredible breaking his school record, the facility record and the Big meet record. We are in a good spot but still have some work to get done over the next two weeks to be ready for the Championship meets" stated Head Coach, Jerry Baltes.
 
In the women's 60m dash, the Lakers secured three of the Top 5 spots with Angelica Floyd leading the pack and taking home first place in a time of 7.81. Melia Williams and Kate Zang claimed third and fifth for the Lakers finishing with a time of 7.86 (Williams) and 7.93 (Zang). 
 
On the men's team, Antonio Passarelli and Myles Rhodes finished back-to-back in the men's 200m dash earning first and second place. Passarelli recorded a time of 22.09 followed shortly by Rhodes in a time of 22.11. Freshman, Ben Ireland led the Lakers in the men's 400m dash placing first with a new personal-best time of 48.78.

The Lakers end their regular indoor season next weekend as they host the GVSU Tune-Up on Friday, February 17th starting at 3:00 p.m.
