Big Meet, Big Records Broken

02.10.2023

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State Lakers were hosts to over 100 teams and 1500 athletes on Friday, February 10th at the GVSU Big Meet. The Grand Valley State track and field team showed up and put on a solid perform at the Big Meet as they set new personal records on both the track and in the field. Myles Kerner put on a show for the Laker's throws team breaking three records within the men's shot put invite in addition to earning a new personal-best.

Kerner claimed a first-place finish in the shot put invite with a distance of 19.57m, making him the new record holder of the GVSU School record, the Kelly Family Sports Center record and the Big Meet record. Kerner held the previous school record of 19.29m, while the Kelly and the Big Meet records were held by Austin Novak in 2014 with a distance of 19.40m. Kerner's first-place finish and 19.57m throw secure his spot on top of the National List.

Head Coach, Jerry Baltes stated, "We had a lot of great performances. Our sprint/hurdle crew had a breakthrough night with many lifetime bests, Top 10 marks, and Top 10-15 NCAA marks. Our throws crew continue to be solid as they have been the last few weeks. Our jumps/pole vault squads had some very solid performances and a couple on the verge of huge performances. The distance crew has some marks that will move up the NCAA list. Overall, we are in a strong spot moving forward."

Jacody Sikora broke two personal-best times in the men's 60m and 200m races. Sikora finished fifth in the 60m with a personal-best time of 6.85 and fifth in the 200m with a new time of 21.67 with both finishes hitting the NCAA Division II provisional mark. The men's 4x400 relay team consisting of Fallou Gaye, Jackson Blanchard, Ben Ireland and Myles Rhodes took home first place with a time of 3:13.61. This relay team of four also hit the NCAA provisional mark of 3:17.34.

On the women's side, Natalie Graber and Lauren Kiley finished back-to-back in the women's 3000m run claiming first and second for the Lakers. Graber recorded a new personal-best time of 9:22.48 ranking her first on the National List for the 3000m. Kiley finished shortly behind with another personal-best time of 9:30.46 placing her third on the National List.
