LEBANON, Ill. – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team lost 73-65 Sunday (Dec. 17) afternoon on the road at McKendree. The Lakers fall to 4-5 on the season, while the Bearcats improve to 7-3.
Britain Harris led the Lakers in scoring with 20 points on 8-17 shooting, including four three pointers and seven rebounds.
Trevon Gunter notched 14 points on 6-7 shooting and shot 2-3 from behind the arc.
Marius Grazulis and
William Dunn led the team with 10 rebounds each. Dunn scored eight points and Grazulis added seven.
It was back and forth early on that saw two lead changes and one tie. The Lakers led 12-9 at the under 12-minute media timeout.
Jalen Charity gave the Lakers their largest lead with a tough layup plus the foul. McKendree responded by going on a 10-0 run to go up 19-14. The Bearcats would get their largest lead of the half after nailing a three pointer to make it 29-22 with just over four minutes remaining.
The Lakers responded and cut the deficit to one on a Harris layup. McKendree would end the half on an 8-0 run to take a nine-point lead into the locker room.
In the second half, McKendree pushed the lead to eleven early, but the Lakers would cut the deficit to four off a Harris dunk with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. After back-and-forth action midway throught the second half that saw the Bearcats push their lead to double digits, Gunter drained a three to bring the Lakers back within five with under five minutes to go. McKendree would end up closing it out down the stretch to win by eight points.
