ST. LOUIS, MO – Back in the postseason and back in the win column for the Grand Valley State women's volleyball team, as they dominated Quincy in a 3-0 sweep to pick up their first NCAA win since 2014. The Lakers move on to face top-seeded UMSL tomorrow in the Regional Semifinals.
The match was a defensive clinic by the Lakers as they never let the Hawks above 18 points, winning 25-18, 25-10, and 25-12. In total, GVSU posted 12 blocks and held Quincy's offense to a -.082 hitting percentage. In set one, the Lakers raced out to a 9-4 lead, then increased that lead up to 16-8. The Hawks rallied, cutting into their deficit to bring it to 19-16, but GVSU answered with a 6-2 run to end the set and go up 1-0. With the Lakers up 8-4 in the second set, they went on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 15-4. After four straight points from Quincy, GVSU went on another run, this time to the tune of 10-2, closing out a dominant set two win. Set three was more of the same, as GVSU used a 9-0 run to go from up 12-8 to now leading 21-8. From there they cruised the rest of the way to complete the sweep of the Hawks.
A balanced Laker offense was led by
Jordyn Gates, who had 10 kills as part of a triple-double, as she added 11 assists and 12 digs.
Sarah Wight had eight kills and five blocks, while
Kendall Stover and
Kate Goudreau each had seven kills.
Brianna Stawski tallied seven total blocks, while
Julia Blaney added 15 digs and
Rachel Jacquay had 19 assists.
