ST. LOUIS, MO – A historic season from the GVSU women's volleyball team comes to a close in the Midwest Regional semifinals in a 3-1 loss to UMSL. This season the Lakers were 27-5, their most wins since 2014, and claimed their first GLIAC regular season title and NCAA Tournament win since the same year.
The Tritons got off to a hot start in set one, going up 12-5 to begin the set. The Lakers could not get any closer the rest of the way, falling 25-15. Set two was a different story, as GVSU got up 5-3, but UMSL went on a 6-0 run to take a 9-6 lead. The Lakers showed resilience, using a 9-4 scoring run to take a 14-13 lead. The two teams traded points until they were tied at 23 apiece, but the Lakers took the final two points of the set to win 25-23. In the third set, the Lakers led 9-6, but a 5-1 run from UMSL gave them the lead, and they would close on a 7-1 run to win 25-17. The Tritons brought their momentum over into the final set, never letting the Lakers get going, finishing out with a 25-13 win.
Sarah Wight had a massive game, tallying 11 kills on a .321 hitting percentage, while notching eight blocks.
Jordyn Gates had 10 kills, 17 assists, and 11 digs for her 15
th triple-double of the year.
Rachel Jacquay dished out 17 assists and
Julia Blaney had 15 digs.
This concludes the Laker careers of
Madison Gates,
Sarah Wight,
Rachel Jacquay,
Isabella Kandes, and
Carley Baughman. The five have been a part of on GLIAC Championship, two trips to the NCAA Tournament, and 88 victories.
