ALLENDALE, MICH. – Welcome to the top of the GLIAC standings Grand Valley State volleyball! The Lakers took on rival Ferris State tonight in Allendale, and GVSU took down the nineteenth ranked Bulldogs in four sets, to tie them atop the league standings at 12-2.
The Lakers won the match 27-25, 25-23, 18-25, and 25-21. In set one, the Bulldogs were able to get an early lead, going up 9-6, before the Lakers came back to tie the match, then eventually take a 16-15 lead. FSU responded, and brought it to set point at 24-21, but GVSU answered right back, ending the set on a 6-1 run to squeak out the set one victory. The Bulldogs led for most of the second set early on, until GVSU was able to grab a 16-13 lead following a 4-0 run. The Bulldogs would come back to tie it multiple times, but they could never regain the lead, as GVSU held on to go up 2-0. Ferris controlled the third set, only trailing 2-1 early on, but they took a 3-2 lead and never looked back, bringing it to 2-1 in the match. After a back-and-forth beginning to the fourth set, GVSU went on an 8-2 run to take a 12-8 lead and force a Bulldog timeout. Ferris responded out of the timeout with a 7-1 run to go up 15-13 midway through the set. Grand Valley got hot from there, ending the match with a 12-6 scoring run, capped off with a kill from
Kendall Stover, giving the Lakers their second win over a ranked opponent this season.
Sarah Wight led the way with 14 kills and six total blocks, while swinging at a .400 clip.
Kendall Stover and
Kate Goudreau each had 12 kills, with Stover adding 15 digs to have a double-double.
Jordyn Gates also had a double-double, recording 30 assists and 18 digs, adding nine kills.
Rachel Jacquay dished out 22 assists and
Julia Blaney had 19 digs.
