MIDLAND, MICH. – Playing their third consecutive road game, the GVSU women's basketball team matched Northwood Saturday evening. A close game throughout, the Lakers had five players score double-figures to take the 75-71 win.
The Lakers got out to a quick 4-0 lead after two
Nicole Kamin layups, but Northwood responded with an 8-2 run to take an 8-6 lead. The Timberwolves held a 15-13 lead with just over a minute remaining, but
Paige Vanstee drilled a triple to put GVSU up 16-15 at the end of the first.
Both teams traded baskets to begin the second period, with Northwood leading 28-27 with about five minutes remaining. The Lakers went on a 9-2 run to take a six-point lead at 36-30 after
Megan Crow scored a layup. They continued to lead at 38-33, but the Timberwolves hit a three at the buzzer to cut the deficit to two at the break.
GVSU came out of halftime on an 8-3 run to push their lead up to 46-39. After Northwood brought it down to 49-43,
Abrie Cabana buried a three to give the Lakers their biggest lead of the game at nine points. The Timberwolves were able to chip into that lead a bit, but still trailed 59-53 with 10 minutes to play.
Cabana hit another three to bring the lead back up to nine points in the opening possession of the fourth. From there Northwood went on a 16-6 run to take a 69-68 lead, their first lead since early in the second quarter.
Rylie Bisballe answered with an and-1 layup and free throw, putting the Lakers back up 71-69. From there, GVSU hit four of four free throws to ice the game and survive their trip up to Midland and move to 5-0.
Rylie Bisballe had a big 10 point, 10 rebound double-double, as she shot 4-6 from the field.
Paige Vanstee led all scorers with 14 points, while adding six boards, and
Abrie Cabana and
Ellie Droste each had 13 points.
Nicole Kamin added 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
