Women's Basketball Set For First Road Trip Of The Year, Traveling To Findlay and Central State

11.16.2023

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The first road trip of the season is coming up for the GVSU women's basketball, as they travel to Findlay for a 5:30 start on Friday and then head to Central State Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 game. After sweeping their opening weekend, the Lakers have begun the season 2-0 for the seventh consecutive year.

The third-ranked Lakers opened the season last weekend by defeating UMSL and Maryville at home. GVSU beat the Tritons 58-45 in the opener, then followed that up with a 70-56 victory the next day versus Maryville. In the season opener, Megan Crow paced the Lakers with a career-high 16 points, going 8-10 from the field, while Ellie Droste added 15 points, shooting 6-8 from the floor. The next day against the Saints, Droste went off for 24 points, which included her 1,000th career point, to lead all scorers. Rylie Bisballe added a near double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds, as GVSU won the rebounding battle 44-24.

Findlay is also 2-0, having defeated Lake Superior State and Saginaw Valley State in the opening weekend. The Oilers offense has propelled them in the early season, as they have averaged 78 points per game, and they have three players averaging double-figures. The scoring is led by senior guard Kate Ellis, who is averaging 21.5 points on 53.8% shooting. Also in double-figures are Alyssa Ziehler (13.5 ppg) and Janae Hoying (13 ppg). Findlay is forcing over 11 turnovers per game and scoring 14 points off those turnovers. The Lakers won last season's matchup over the Oilers 83-45.

Capping off the weekend is a trip to Central State Saturday afternoon. The Marauders have begun the season 0-2, falling to Saint Leo and Florida Tech last weekend. Central State has been scoring the ball well to open the year, averaging 71.9 points per game. Their defense, however, has been suspect, allowing 76.8 points a contest. They have grabbed 50 rebounds per game, led by Kailyn Nash's 8.4 a game. The scoring is also paced by Nash's 16.2 points, as she is shooting 44.2% from the field and 34.4% from three. Last year, GVSU won 100-51, as Droste scored 16 and Lexi Plitzuweit scored 12 points in the win.
