ASHLAND, Ohio – The Grand Valley State men's basketball dropped their season opener 62-61 at Ashland Friday (Nov. 10) night at the Kates Gymnasium. The Lakers fall to 0-1 on the season while the Eagles begin their season 1-0.
Sophomore
Mason Docks led the Lakers in scoring with 21 points on 9-13 shooting including three triples and three assists. Sophomore
Britain Harris dropped 11 points on 5-15 while hauling in three rebounds and dishing out three assists. Redshirt junior
William Dunn added 10 points shooting 4-10 from the field and 2-3 from three. Dunn led the Lakers hauling in 12 rebounds for his first double double as a Laker.
The game went back-and-forth to start with the score being tied a 13-13 halfway through the first half. The Lakers used a 15-2 run to go up 30-17 with three minutes remaining. GVSU would lead 34-24 heading into the locker room.
Ashland began the second half with a 10-2 run to pull within two points in the first four minutes. The Lakers would push the lead to seven at 43-36 off a mid-range jumper by
Trevor Smith. Docks would hit a three midway through the second half to push the lead to nine for the Lakers.
Ashland would respond by going on a 10-0 run to take a one-point lead with eight minutes remaining. Both teams would trade baskets and the Lakers would hit back-to-back threes by Dunn and
Trevon Gunter to give GVSU a 56-53 lead with 5:30 minutes remaining. Docks nailed his third three of the game with five minutes left to give the Lakers four-point lead.
Ashland scored the final four points in the game with under three minutes to play including the go-ahead basket with 27 seconds remaining. The Lakers missed on a last second shot and would fall short in the season opener 62-61.
