ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's volleyball team returned home to take on rival SVSU tonight for the second edition of this season's Battle of the Valleys. The Lakers took care of business again, sweeping the Cardinals to win their seventh straight game and move to 13-1 on the season.
The Lakers jumped out to an 8-2 lead in set one and they never looked back as SVSU was never able to get closer than four points the rest of the set, winning 25-16. Set two was close to start, with GVSU holding a slim 10-8 lead, but they went on a 15-7 run to end the set, winning 25-15. GVSU got out to a 13-8 lead in the third set before the Cardinals came back to tie it at 13. The two teams traded short scoring runs until it was tied at 23 apiece. From there,
Kaitlyn Bingham put the Lakers ahead with a massive kill, then
Meghan O'Sullivan put the Cardinals away with a kill herself.
Brianna Stawski led the way with 13 kills on a .375 hitting percentage.
Jordyn Gates had nine kills, 22 assists, and six digs, with
Kendall Stover adding eight kills and 12 digs.
Rachel Jacquay dished out 26 assists and
Julia Blaney dug out 22 balls.
