Lakers Breeze To 7-0 Victory Over Aquinas College

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State Women's Tennis closed out their Fall schedule Friday afternoon at the GVSU Tennis Courts with an impressive 7-0 victory over Aquinas College.
The Lakers (1-0) won every set, only dropping 14 games out of 86 total. Grand Valley State head coach Samantha Barr was pleased with how the team performed through some windy weather.

"We performed great," Barr said. "We stepped up and had comfortable matches across the board against some tough conditions out here with the wind, but the players handled it well and took care of business."

Freshman Vale Mozas and Senior Sophia Hanover won their matches 6-0, 6-0 respectively. Junior Neus Ramos also produced a bagel, only dropping one total game in her 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Senior Vasileia Griva scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory on the No.1 line. Sophomore Amanda Diaz also notched a 6-2, 6-4 victory on the No.2 line.

The Lakers also dominated in doubles. Playing in her final match with Grand Valley State, Senior Olivia Huang teamed up with Sophomore Anna Soteras for a 6-2 victory. Huang, who is graduating in December with a B.S. in Exercise Science.

"I think today was a really special day. It kind of sums up my whole experience," Huang said. "I got to play with a really close friend of mine, Anna Soteras, and we played really well today despite the conditions. I think we held it all together and managed to come out with a win."

Huang has been with the team since the 2019-20 season, which was cut short by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Huang posted a perfect 7-0 singles record before the cancellation of the season. The Sydney, Australia native is also pursuing a Master's of Public Health and looks forward to creating policies for healthy living habits. Barr said she's played a major role in helping establish a foundation which has pushed the team towards back-to-back GLIAC Championships.

"She came in the Spring and has been here to see the team develop over the past several years," Barr said. "She's been a big part in helping the team establish a positive culture, so it was great to see her play and for the team to support her in her last match."

Ramos and Mozas clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory.

The dominant victory closes the book on a successful Fall campaign. Grand Valley State will return in the Spring, looking to win a third consecutive GLIAC Championship.
