GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. – The GVSU women's volleyball team hit the road tonight to play their crosstown rivals for the second time this season. GVSU won the first matchup 3-0, but on Halloween night, the Panthers put a scare in the Lakers, but GVSU was able to prevail in a thrilling five set match. The win moves the Lakers to 20-3, giving them their first 20 win season since 2015.
The Lakers had to battle back to win the match, dropping sets one and three by the scores of 23-25 and 21-25, while winning sets two, four, and five by the scores of 26-24, 25-29, and 15-12.
In set one, the two teams traded points throughout, until GVSU used a 5-0 run to go up 20-16 and force a Davenport timeout. Following that timeout, the Panthers were hot, ending the set on a 9-3 run to take the early lead in the match. After DU took a 9-6 lead in set two, GVSU battled back to retake the lead at 15-14. From there neither team could muster up much of a run, until with the Panthers up 24-23, GVSU rattled off the final three points of the set to tie the match at one.
Set three was much like the first set, as GVSU held a late lead, this time 21-17, but Davenport rallied back to finish off with the final eight points of the set to lead the match once again. The Lakers started out hot in the fourth set, going up 8-4, but once again the Panthers came back and eventually took the lead at 17-15. The Lakers responded with seven consecutive points and ended on a 10-2 run to force a fifth set. GVSU got out to an early 4-2 lead, but Davenport came back and took the 8-6 lead as the two teams switched sides. From there it was all Lakers, as they used a 5-0 run to take the lead they would never let up and complete the season sweep of their crosstown foes.
