Lakers Lose At The Buzzer To Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, MICH. – In one of the toughest places in the GLIAC to play, the Grand Valley State women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with Michigan Tech before falling on a buzzer-beating jumper 57-56.

Emily Spitzley and Nicole Kamin hit back-to-back layups to open the game for GVSU, as they went up 4-0 early on. Michigan Tech came back to take a 10-9 lead, but GVSU ended the first quarter on a 10-2 scoring run to lead 19-12 after one.

The lead got extended to double-digits after buckets from Rylie Bisballe and Hannah Kulas to put the Lakers up 23-12. A Kamin three brought the lead up to as much as 14 at 31-17, before the Huskies scored four points to end the quarter, still trailing 31-21.

That run continued into the third quarter, as they scored 12 straight points to retake the lead at 33-31. It was Grand Valley's turn to go on a run after that, as they responded with a 10-0 run to go up 41-33. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way, as GVSU led 46-38 with one quarter to play.

The Huskies cut the lead down to two points four minutes into the fourth quarter and from there it was back and forth. With two seconds left Nicole Kamin was fouled and went to the line and knocked down a free throw to put GVSU up 56-55. The Huskies advanced the ball to halfcourt with a timeout and off the inbound hit a long contested two-pointer to beat the buzzer.

Nicole Kamin scored a career-high 16 points on 5-10 shooting, while Emily Spitzley added 10 points. Rylie Bisballe just missed out on a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Spitzley and Paige Vanstee both pulled down four rebounds each.
