ALLENDALE, MICH. – It was 616 night in the Fieldhouse and the Grand Valley women's basketball team represented the Grand Rapids area well, dominating Wayne State 81-44 in the first home game of the new year.
Wayne State got the scoring started with a layup on their first possession, but that was the last time they would hold the lead, as the Lakers came right back and scored eight straight points, getting triples from
Nicole Kamin and
Emily Spitzley to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Warriors got it within two at 8-6, but a
Rylie Bisballe layup and two more threes from Spitzley pushed the lead up to 10 points.
Lexi Plitzuweit would hit a three and Bisballe would score six more points to close out the quarter, as GVSU led 27-15 after one quarter.
The defenses stepped up to open the second period, as the two teams combined for only six points over the first five minutes of play. Plitzuweit got the Lakers going after that, scoring five consecutive points, and assisting on another Laker bucket, as the lead built up over 20 after another Kamin three made it 41-19. Kamin and Spitzley would each hit another three before the end of the quarter and gave the Lakers a strong 49-26 lead with one half to play.
Grand Valley opened the second half on an 11-5 scoring run and after a three from
Hannah Kulas late in the quarter they pushed the lead above 30 points at 65-34. The Warriors would make two free throws in the final minute of the quarter to make it 65-36 at the end of three.
The lead was cut down to 25, but the Lakers answered right back with a three from
Paige Vanstee and seven straight points from
Ellie Droste to start a 16-4 run to end the game for the Lakers and move them to 15-1 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in conference play.
Nicole Kamin led the way with a career-high 15 points, on 5-6 shooting and 3-3 from distance.
Emily Spitzley added 14 points, while
Lexi Plitzuweit and
Rylie Bisballe each scored 10. Plitzuweit,
Hadley Miller, and
Courtney Sharland all pulled down six rebounds, as the Lakers outrebounded the Warriors 48-29. GVSU forced 25 Wayne State turnovers, with Plitzuweit, Spitzley, and Kamin all recording three steals each.
