ALLENDALE, Mich. - The No. 6 Grand Valley State women's soccer team defeated Davenport 5-1 Friday (Sept. 30) night in the crosstown showdown. The Lakers improve to 8-1-2 on the season, 6-0-1 in GLIAC play.
The Lakers saw five different players score as they outshoot the Panthers 21-6, 10-3 on goal. GVSU started off strong, getting the first shot of the game in the 2' minute when
Kennedy Metzger fired a shot from just outside the top right of the box that was saved by the goalkeeper. Three minutes later, the Lakers found the back of the net in the 5' minute to take the early 1-0 lead.
Nina Ferraro got past the defender and took a shot with the left foot from the top of the box that went up and over the outstretched goalkeeper. That goal was Ferraro's second of the season.
The Lakers would add another goal in the 11' minute to make it 2-0.
Kennedy Bearden notched her sixth goal of the season off a great cross from the right side by Metzger. The Lakers would hang on to a 2-0 lead after the first 45 minutes and led 10-1 in shots.
In the second half, the Lakers got a flurry of chances that saw one shot hit the post and two that sailed high. In the 59' minute Bearden had a shot blocked from inside the box.
Taylor Reid was there for the rebound but her shot hit the post and it went right to
Emma Chudik who was there to put it home for her first career goal as a Laker.
Kennedy Metzger would make it 4-0 in the 67' minute for her third goal of the season. Metzger stole the ball from the defender in the middle of the box and made no mistake, beating the goalkeeper on the low left side of the goal.
Davenport added a long-distance goal in the 77' minute to cut the Laker lead to three. The Lakers would add a fifth goal to get the lead back to four with just three seconds remaining in the game. Off a throw in,
Chantel Carranza made a move to get past the defender and placed a great cross to the middle of the box for
Riley O'Brien to head it in the net. That goal was O'Brien's second of the season.
Kendall Robertson got the start in goal for the Lakers and played 72 minutes making two saves.
Callie Rich played 18 minutes in net for the Lakers in the win. A total of 23 Laker field players saw action in the win. Bearden led the Lakers with five shots, while
Cate Brown led all Lakers with 74 minutes played.
Tonight's game marks the halfway point in GLIAC play with the Lakers sitting atop the GLIAC standings. GVSU will get be off this Sunday before traveling to the U.P. next weekend to face off against Michigan Tech on Friday (Oct. 7) at 7:00 pm and Northern Michigan Sunday (Oct. 9) at 1:00 pm.
