No. 6 GVSU Downs Michigan Tech 2-0 for Seventh Straight Win

Lakers score both goals in second half

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The No. 6 Grand Valley State women's soccer extended their winning streak to seven games after defeating Michigan Tech 2-0 Friday (Oct. 7) night at Kearly Stadium in Houghton, Michigan. The Lakers improved their record to 9-1-2, 7-0-1 in the GLIAC, while the Huskies fall to 3-6-3, 1-3-1 in GLIAC play.

The Lakers dominated defensively, holding the Michigan Tech offense to just one-shot attempt and no corner kicks. GVSU controlled possession and created scoring chances early. Kennedy Bearden got the first shot of the game but was stopped by the goalkeeper in the 8' minute. Mackenzie Jones would get a scoring chance in the 19' minute but her shot was stopped by the Michigan Tech goalkeeper.  The game would remain scoreless after the first 45 minutes of play with the Lakers leading 5-0 in shots and 3-0 in corner kicks.

In the second half, the Lakers continued to hold much of the possession and got their first shot on goal in the 53' minute with a Jones shot from just outside the box that was saved. The Lakers got on the board in the 57' minute on Mackenzie Jones third goal of the season.  Sophia Morgan sent a cross from the right side that sailed through a lot of traffic in the middle of the box and right to Jones at the left side of the box who made no mistake.

The Laker defense did not allow Michigan Tech to get good looks. Michigan Tech's lone shot came in the 72' minute on a header that went high off a cross from the right side.

In the 89' minute, Taylor Reid notched her seventh goal of the season to seal the win for the Lakers. With under a minute remaining, the Husky player tried making a pass to the defender, but Reid was there to intercept it and kick it into the empty net.

The Lakers outshot Michigan Tech 14-1, 6-0 on goal and had 11 corner kicks to the Huskies zero. Jones led the Lakers with the game-winning goal and five shots all on goal. Kacy Lauer added two shot both on goal, while Kennedy Metzger and Ryann Fetty each had two shots. Sophia Morgan dished out her first assist of the season. Kendall Robertson got the start in net for the Lakers and earned her fourth lone shutout of the season.
