GVSU-MTU Highlights

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 7 Grand Valley State women's soccer team defeated Michigan Tech 1-0 Sunday (Sept. 25) afternoon. The Lakers improve their record to 7-1-2, 5-0-1 in the GLIAC, while the Huskies fall to 3-5-2, 1-3-2 in the GLIAC. The Lakers will be back home next Friday (Sept. 30) when host Davenport under the lights in the crosstown showdown at 7:00 PM.

The Lakers dominated most of the possession and outshot the huskies 17-6, 9-2 on goal. The Lakers also had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Lakers came out the game aggressive, creating several scoring chances. Kacy Lauer got the first shot on goal in the game for the Lakers but was saved by the goalkeeper in the 8' minute. Eight minutes later in the 16' minute, Lauer got another scoring opportunity, but the keeper made a good save to keep the game scoreless. The game would remain scoreless at the break with the Lakers holding a 10-1 advantage in shots.

In the second half, the Lakers broke through in the 51' minute to take a 1-0 lead. Kennedy Metzger made a nice to move to get around the defender on the right side and placed the ball into the center box where Taylor Reid was there to put in home. That goal was Reid's sixth of the season and fourth goal in the last three games.

Reid's goal would end up being the difference maker as the Laker defense was outstanding in the win. Kendall Robertson got the start in goal for the Lakers and made two saves. Cate Brown played all 90 minutes for the Lakers and made key defensive plays along with Brooke Russell to help keep the huskies to just six shot attempts. Lauer led the Laker offense with five shots, four on goal, while Kennedy Bearden added four shots with one on target.
