Grand Valley State head men's wrestling coach
Joey Simcoe announced the hiring of Nick Mason as an assistant coach in the program. Mason comes to GVSU after an outstanding wrestling career at Tiffin University under the tutelage of Simcoe.
Â
"I am excited to join coach Simcoe at Grand Valley State," said Mason. "This is an opportunity to build a program from literally the ground up and make an impact in each facet of what we want to build. This is a project with no limits and very few individuals are afforded an opportunity to begin their coaching career in a situation of this magnitude."
Â
Mason, a three-time All-American, tallied a career record of 117-34 at Tiffin with four NCAA Regional Championships. Nick claimed the 2019 NCAA DII National Championship at 197 pounds, concluding the season 28-7 with 16 falls. Mason tallied record of 25-6 in 2020 with 17 falls, but the NCAA Championships were cancelled due to Covid. He concluded his career with a third-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Championships, recording 19 falls en route to a 30-7 record. Mason tallied 69 falls during his career and was twice named the NCAA Falls Champion.Â
Â
"I am extremely pleased to have Nick join me at Grand Valley State," said first-year head coach
Joey Simcoe. "Nick possesses the traits that you are looking for in a coach, which are a direct reflection of his wrestling career. He has integrity, an unmatched work ethic, high motor and an infectious, positive personality," added Simcoe.
Â
A native of Shelby Township, Michigan and Utica High School, Nick was a two-time MHSAA State qualifier.
