No. 24 Softball sweeps Parkside Thursday

Beatus throws third no-hitter of the season in game one

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 24 Grand Valley State softball team swept the Parkside Rangers with a pair of shutout wins Thursday (April 7) at the GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers won 7-0 and 6-0 to improve to 23-4 on the season and 8-2 in GLIAC play. GVSU is back on their home field to host Saginaw Valley this Saturday (April 9) for a doubleheader beginning at 2 PM.

Hannah Beatus threw her third no-hitter of the season in the opener; her fifth of her career. She carried a perfect game until two outs in the seventh when the Rangers got their first baserunner on a dropped strike three, one of her seven strikeouts in the win (11-1).

The Lakers got on the board in the third with a three-spot. Bailey Thatcher singled home a run, then Morgan Spicer drove in the first of her three RBI of the game before Taylor Rieger capped off the inning with a run-scoring single.

The Lakers added two spots in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away. Spicer singled with two outs and the bases loaded to score a pair in the fifth then Lydia Goble doubled home a run and scored on a single by Kelsey Komorous in the sixth to round out the scoring.

The Lakers struck first in game two with a two-out, RBI-double from Megan Koenigshof into the left-center gap. GVSU broke things open with a four-run fifth. After loading the bases with a pair of bunt singles and a true infield hit, Rieger drew a walk to push a run across then, after a Goble RBI-groundout, Wagner doubled down the left field line to chase home two more.

Ashley Platek went five shutout innings in the circle, allowing four hits – all singles – and struck out four without walking a batter to earn the win (3-1). Hannah Dieck pitched the final two innings to close out the shutout.
