No. 24 softball wins two over Saginaw Valley Saturday

GVSU comes back for 2-1 win then blanks Cards, 5-0, in game two

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 24 Grand Valley State softball team swept a doubleheader from the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals Saturday (April 9). The Lakers were down to their final out before a comeback 2-1 win in the opener then blanked the Cardinals, 5-0, in the second game. GVSU improves to 25-4 on the season and 10-2 in the GLIAC, riding an eight-game win streak.

With the Lakers down to their last out and the bases empty in the seventh, Kaitlin Lynch singled to extend the game then Megan Koenigshof beat out an infield single to give Joanna Cirrincione a chance. She delivered with a double just inside the left field line to score both runners and walk it off.

Hannah Beatus was again sensational in the circle, allowing one unearned run in the complete-game win (12-1). She struck out a pair and walked one while scattering five hits.

The Lakers struck early and often in game two, putting up single tallies in the second and third innings before a three-run fourth. Sammie Gehrls doubled home a run in the first, Taylor Rieger roped an RBI single in the second then delivered a sacrifice fly in the third while Lydia Goble singled home a run in the inning as well.

Genesis Eggart (W, 7-1) pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits and a pair of walks while striking out eight.
