Lakers Dominate the Field at Davenport

CALEDONIA, Mich. -  Judith Essemiah claimed her fourth straight win of the season in the women's hammer throw at the Davenport Invitational. Essemiah won the hammer throw with a distance of 58.39, Alaina Omonode placed second with a distance of 54.03.  Emma Richards claimed two first-place finishes in the throw events for the Lakers. Richards won by throwing 48.98m in the discus throw and putting 14.04m in shot put. Chanse Setzke, Myles Kerner, Jacob Urban, and Eli Kosiba left their marks in the field finishing first in long jump, shot put, javelin, and high jump. 

Chanse Setzke placed first jumping a distance of 6.73m in the long jump. Eli Kosiba won the high jump for fourth time this season clearing the bar at a height of 2.12m. On his second attempt of the day, Jacob Urban won the javelin throw with a distance of 54.00m. Urban placed second in the hammer throw with a distance of 61.25m.  Myles Kerner won the men's shot put with a distance of 18.79m. 

On the track, the distance team ran under the lights on Friday, April 29th with Dennis Mbuta leading the men in the 800m with a time of 1:50.51 finishing first. In the women' s 800m, Morgan Fuerst and Cameron Cleveland placed second (2:12.77) and third (2:12.99), respectively.  Caleb Swart finished second in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:35.47.  Emma Everhart-Deckard ran a personal-best time in the 5000m clocking in a time of 17:14.54 finishing fourth. 

In Des Moines, Sam Martens placed first in the 10,000m with a personal-best time of 29:32.46. Martens took over the race at the 5600m mark and never dropped back winning the race by nearly four seconds.  Grace Pagone placed third in the women's 10,000m with a season-best time of 35:09.77. In the 3000m steeplechase, Natalie Graber ran a personal-best time of 10:41.05 finishing 12th. 

Elli Kimes closed out the regular season with a second place finish in pole vault clearing a height of 4.17m for the second time this season. The Lakers end the regular season with over 65 NCAA DII provisional marks. 

The GVSU men enter the championship season looking to claim the triple crown. The Laker men won the 2021 NCAA DII Cross Country Championships, and the 2022 Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Laker women placed second at both National Championships and are looking to claim the program's third outdoor championship title. GVSU will host the GLIAC Outdoor Championships on May 4 - 6 and then the NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 26 - 28.
