The No. 8 Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team took home the 2022 GLIAC Regular Season Championship title after defeating the Northern Michigan Wildcats in the final regular season game of the year. The Lakers' 18-7 victory on Senior Day is the 14th consecutive win for GVSU as they advance to 8-0 in the conference and 16-1 on the year.
It was a close first quarter as sophomore Maddy Champagne netted the first goal of the day for GVSU with NMU responding shortly after. Tied at 1-1, senior Sophie Conroy was able to take one down field and send it home with just eight seconds remaining in the period. GVSU had a 2-1 lead going into the second quarter until junior Molly Bursinger scored back-to-back goals to extend the lead to three. The Lakers outscored the WIldcats 7-1 in the quarter and went into halftime with a 9-2 advantage.
Senior Olivia Esposito scored her second goal of the day to open up the second half. While NMU followed with a goal of their own, the Lakers would go on 4-1 run to close out the third quarter and take a 14-4 lead heading into the fourth. Sophomore Hailey Crittenden, junior Maggie Hammer, and seniors Hannah Moore and Caitlin Burnett each netted a goal for GVSU in the final quarter to give the Lakers an 18-7 victory over the Wildcats.
Bursinger led the Lakers with four goals, three assists, four ground balls, and nine draw controls. Sophomore Sydney Stone netted three goals, followed by Conroy, Esposito, and freshman Ashleigh Rothe who each netted two goals. Champagne scored a goal for the Lakers while also winning three controls, with Hammer, Moore, Crittenden, and Burnett each recording one goal a piece. GVSU outshot the Wildcats 28-16 with 23 of the Lakers' shots on goal. Defensively, the Lakers forced 22 turnovers and grabbed 28 ground balls.
