The No. 7 Grand Valley State Lakers defeated Northern Michigan in the 2022 GLIAC Women's Lacrosse Semifinals and will advance to the GLIAC Championship on Sunday, May 1 at noon. The 23-2 victory over the Wildcats is the 15th consecutive win this season, the longest winnest streak in program history, and with the most wins in a single-season, GVSU is now 17-1 on the year.
GVSU took the lead early as the Laker offense was started by sophomore Sydney Stone, followed by three Laker goals from senior Olivia Esposito and juniors Kate DeYoung and Molly Bursinger. With GVSU leading 4-0, the Wildcats scored what would be their only two goals of the game to bring it within two with 4:30 left in the first quarter. Shutting out NMU in the second, third, and fourth quarters, the Lakers would finish the game with 19 unanswered goals.
Senior Sophie Conroy led the Lakers with five goals, three assists, and three ground balls, followed by DeYoung who netted four goals on the day. Junior Maggie Hammer and Stone each scored a hat trick, while Hammer also dished out three assists for the Lakers. Bursinger scored two goals, dished out four assists, and won eight draw controls. Freshmen Ashleigh Rothe and Ellie Bernard netted two goals apiece, followed by seniors Hannah Moore and Olivia Esposito who each scored a goal for the Lakers. GVSU outshot the Wildcats 49-7 with 39 of the Lakers' shots on goal and also won the draw control battle 20-6.
